Editorial Reviews

Not just guitarists, but jazz lovers everywhere marveled at the feats of musicianship and musicality pulled off by Pass on the LP that made him famous ('73). These unaccompanied solos still stun and deeply satisfy: Night and Day; Stella by Starlight; Cherokee; How High the Moon; 'Round Midnight; The Song Is You , and more!

This CD is a must for any fan of Joe Pass or any fan of Jazz guitar.

What distinguishes him, in my mind, is his choice of chord forms, which were always very solidly and logically constructed.

This recording showcases one of the most, if not the most, talented guitarists that I have ever heard.

The back story of Joe Pass is compelling and fascinating. Virtuoso was released in 1974, but it was by no means Pass' first album. Pass lingered in relative obscurity for many years prior to then, due in part no doubt to drug addiction. But those demons were overcome and Norman Granz, the ubiquitous producer of many great jazz albums, in an act of inspiration put Mr. Pass in front of a mike, alone, and let his talent speak for the ages. The results, "Virtuoso", sky rocketed Pass to adulation, attention and the top of Down Beat lists of the best guitarist thereafter.
The songs are generally of tried and true standards (Stella By Starlight and 'Round Midnight for example) and one Pass composition, Blues for Alican.
This is the quintessential solo jazz album; inspired, technically great and innovative. You can clearly hear the influence of Django Reinhardt, but Pass definitely has his own voice. This is the Pass album to have, no doubt about it.
As a side note, this album has been remastered under the "Original Jazz Classics" series. Thus the sound quality is crisp and fresh. I would recommend any in this series, but some, such as this Pass album, certainly are more note worthy.

I am a jazz guitar player and "student" of Joe's recordings. I probably learned more about jazz chord work from this album as any album that I have owned. As such, I'd deem it a "must buy" for all aspiring jazz guitarists. Joe was truly the "textbook jazz guitar player", in my opinion, and the closest thing there has been to a template when it comes to jazz chord work. What distinguishes him, in my mind, is his choice of chord forms, which were always very solidly and logically constructed. Nothing overly esoteric, just "meat and potatoes", essential stuff, that was masterfully choreographed and played. Of course, I failed to mention that Joe was a freaking monster player, his performances are breathtaking, and he could shred single line stuff with the best of them. The "Virtuoso" title ain't no lie. The man was flawless in his execution, and his sense of time was as solid as any guitarist that has ever walked the earth. For someone woodshedding on jazz guitar, there's enough meat and potatoes here to feed most mortals for a couple of lifetimes. It will be a long time before anyone ever surpasses what Joe Pass was able to do with a guitar.

Joe was an astonishing talent. I wouldn't hesitate to buy any album that includes him. I have this and perhaps a dozen or two other albums featuring Joe. My parents took me to a Concord (California) Jazz concert in the early 1970's, and Joe, playing with Herb Ellis, was on the bill. WOW! I was a fledgling guitarist (still am) and Joe and Herb dumbfounded me. I never missed an opportunity to see them, and then Joe alone or in other ensembles after he split from Herb, whenever he was within driving distance. In a period of one month I saw him in a group with Oscar Petersen and Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen in Buffalo and then solo in a small club in New York and in concert solo in Cleveland. Unforgettable. I listen to this album from time to time and still marvel at his knowledge of the guitar neck, all the chord forms and his wonderful bass lines. His life had its ups and downs and he left us far too soon. I highly, highly recommend this album. Others I really, really like would include these with Herb Ellis:
Two for the Road

Seven Come Eleven

These are old albums. Search around. Mine are vinyl.

This guy is phenomenal. Maybe too phenomenal. He has technique out the wazoo, and originality in the bargain. But even as an
experienced violinist and guitarist, I am not able to hear everything he is doing. It's like trying to read the logo on passenger train
passing at 300 miles per hour. He is clearly from another planet--one far, far away. Rod Langston, befuddled

Great album as Joe is one of the best guitarists. You really have to have an appreciation for what he does and how he does it. That said, this is not for the faint of heart. You wont hear any romance songs with sweet melodies as you would with George Benson. Still a neccessary album for any real guitar fans.

This recording showcases one of the most, if not the most, talented guitarists that I have ever heard. I first discovered Joe Pass when I began snapping up as many Pablo LPs as my meager disposable income would allow. I think that even if you're not a huge jazz fan, you can enjoy the solo guitar work on this recording.

I love Joe Pass. This is only the third CD I have by him, but I have loads of CDs of him with Oscar Peterson. The music in Virtuoso is unbelievably great. It seems impossible that so many sounds can come from sols guitar at the same time.
