I have just about read all of Mary Brendan's books and think they provide an interesting and entertaining time. They are complex enough to keep you interested but not stressed over, and they are short enough to finish quickly but not feel cheated. Gavin was one of my favorite characters. He had a questionable history as a rake but by the time this story begins, I think he's matured enough that he's getting tired of it. Sarah is a strong character as well. As the story unfolds and more and more information is given about her past, you find yourself drawn to her innocence and strength. Gavin is the perfect man for her and the fact that he falls and falls hard is nice to read about. The ending was wonderful, too. Their story continues somewhat with Brendan's next book "The Rake's Defiant Mistress" which is about Sarah's friend, Ruth, and Gavin's friend, Clayton.
