More About the Author

Karla Darcy is a fiction writer as well as a professional researcher who has always adored Jane Austen and all things Regency. Raised in Chicago she always hoped she'd be hired to work for the Encyclopedia Britannica or at the very least get a job writing clues for Jeopardy. After college, she ended up at an advertising agency. She didn't get to do much research but luckily got to write the slightly salacious entertainment for the Christmas party and other events where the agency's ads were parodied. Her favorite time period was England during the Regency period so it was a no brainer when she decided to write romantic fiction. It came as an unfortunate circumstance that a history researcher didn't have a clue how to write a book. Thanks to the advice of her favorite bookseller she found and joined a chapter of Romance Writers of America. These generous women were eager to help her learn the craft of writing and it wasn't long before she got the hang of weaving elegant stories of love in the Regency era.

Five Things you might like to know from an interview with Karla:

1. I can count to ten in five languages.
My father loved to learn funny sayings in other languages but the only thing I can remember is how to count.

2. I can recite all of the presidents in order from memory.
My family had a friend who took a Dale Carnegie memory course. One night at dinner he taught us how to memorize the presidents. I got an A in high school History class when the teacher challenged the class to recite them in order.

3. My secret guilty pleasure is watching the Ninja Warrior TV show.
Not the American version but the Japanese version. Even though it has English subtitles, the constant screaming by the Japanese announcer just adds to the whole experience. When you talk about real men, doing impossible feats of strength and not being muscle bound, it doesn't get any better than this. I'd prefer if a few more of them ran the course shirtless.

4. If I couldn't be a writer I'd want to be a radio announcer.
I worked in an advertising agency for years and did a couple of voice over commercials and really got a kick out of it. I have a raspy deep voice that sounds great on the radio and in the dark.

5. I am the world's worst procrastinator especially when I'm on deadline.
Unfortunately I do my best work when I'm up against a really short deadline. Adrenaline kicks in and somehow I get it done because I have a built in barometer that tells me just how much time I need to get something done.

What I love about Karla Darcy's Sweet Deception Regencies is the snarky humor! Such fun! I keep picturing Maggie Smith from Downton Abbey (just adore that character, don't you?) and find myself laughing out loud sometimes. The wit and dialogue fairly sparkle. I didn't think the relationship between Amity and her guardian would be as good as it is, so that was a pleasant surprise. If you haven't read the entire Sweet Deception Regency series by Karla Darcy, you're in for a real treat! Start now!

Lovely story, nicely drawn characters (and not a lot of them to keep straight), a nice mix of action--none of it tense or suspenseful--this is a great, relaxing read. The story line is tried and true, but it rises above the ordinary in the characters, who will make you snort from time to time. The pace of this story is just about perfect--doesn't drag or lurch with improbable action. Well worth the time and money. You'll want to read this more than once.

I truly enjoyed The Virtuous Ward. In an age when raciness seems to be the goal of so many writers, I was very happy to find an author who put her all into realistic, believable characters and who focused on the true foundation of love.

The main characters had me laughing out loud. I loved the fact that they were not shallow and the author allowed them to discover faults in other people through their own intelligence and capabilities, unlike so many other written characters who seem incapable of discovering faults out for themselves.

I liked the characters, all of them. I rooted for them, felt for them and became ingrained in their lives. I will definitely be reading more by this author.

The Virtuous Ward.
The Virtuous Ward is a sweet romance, minus gratuitous sex scenes. The author focuses on the interchange and intense emotions of the characters to keep the readers interested.
Amity guardian finally takes and interest in his ward after several years of neglect. He brings her to London in hopes of quickly marrying her off.
The best part of the book is the characters.
The main character, Amity, has a childlike innocence about her. She has a habit of finding strays and bringing them home. This noble problem leads to some interesting situations that evoke giggles from the readers while maintaining their interest.
Max is a cad bent on finding the perfect wife, and his sweet ward "Amity" is anything but a perfect noble wife, full elegant and grace. However, he can't help being drawn to her sweet innocent clumsy ways as she brings chaos to his orderly home and to his heart.
Max knows he must do his duty by Amity and find her a suitable husband, but will his attempts leave him with a broken heart or can he stops his match scheming before he loses the woman he loves.
The ending will leave the reader satisfied and wishing to pick up the next book in the series as they enjoy a glimpse into Regency England.

Like many historical romances, the hero and heroine are lightweights when it comes to brains and personalities. Every character was one dimensional but the overall story was a good read. I would make one suggestion -- change the cover. The model looks more like a horror story character rather than the good natured heroine in the book.

If you love Pride and Prejudice, you will love The Virtuous Ward. This is my first book by Karla Darcy, and felt she did a wonderful job with writing about a love story set in the Regency Era. Definitely worth taking the time to read!

The Virtuous Ward reminds me of Georgette Heyer's The Grand Sophy; while Amity isn't a madcap like Sophy, she does have compassion for her fellow man and some similar adventures. Sophy makes me laugh out loud; Amity made me smile.

I appreciate Ms. Darcy's ability to write an engaging story that is witty and clean.
