5.0 out of 5 stars An Obscure Treasure! Highly Underrated!
First off, let me just say that I have NEVER seen the film "VIRUS." The soundtrack stands on its own QUITE WELL and there isn't a single track on here that disappoints. Joel McNeely is one of those composers who most people have never heard of...but he has musical talent which rivals (in my opinion) that of well-known composers like Danny Elfman and John Williams...

2.0 out of 5 stars good action score that fails on cd
This score to the Jamie Lee Curtis action horror thriller is scored for full symphonic orchestra and, in one cue, male chorus. The music has no memorable theme to tie the material together and at times becomes very unpleasant to hear. This is not a bad score, just an unpleasant listen away from the movie. This is one CD you'll play once and probably never again.

This review is from: Virus: Original Motion Picture Score (Audio CD)
First off, let me just say that I have NEVER seen the film "VIRUS." The soundtrack stands on its own QUITE WELL and there isn't a single track on here that disappoints. Joel McNeely is one of those composers who most people have never heard of...but he has musical talent which rivals (in my opinion) that of well-known composers like Danny Elfman and John Williams. Unfortunately, the majority of films he's scored in the past decade (like this one) haven't been QUITE as good as those of his famous rivals...

In this wonderful soundtrack, you'll hear a large range of styles. McNeely's sounds describe every picture they paint from action-packed fighting and frighteningly tense situations to incredibly moving heroism/painful sadness. The real gold of this album is the brief Russian chorus on the "End Credits" which is probably the best track as well. Oh, and by the way, to that other reviewer who complained that there really isn't a theme in the score...not so. There are plenty, one of which is the chorus on "Volkov And The MIR," that same theme is used in the "End Credits" as well. Also, just because this score doesn't have a main theme or title doesn't make it weak.

On the whole, this score is one of my all-time favorites and please, I'm not just saying it because I'm a big McNeely fan (even though I am!). This guy's music is astonishingly powerful.

I recommend this album and the composer to anyone who, like me, is interested in something new and obscure.

Also, check out Joel McNeely's soundtrack to "Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire," another of my favorite scores of all time.

You won't be disappointed.
