Book Description

Required Reading Range October 1, 2003
Semiotics—the study of signs and sign systems—has become part of the curriculum of most art schools, and this accessible, visually outstanding introduction strikes the perfect balance between theory and practice. By examining text and image in advertising, as well as “high art” versus “popular culture,” it reveals the difference between signs (such as a word or picture) and signifiers (the concept or object to which it refers).

4.0 out of 5 stars A must have for advertisers and artists, May 14, 2007
This review is from: Visible Signs: An Introduction to Semiotics (Required Reading Range) (Paperback)
If you are into methods of marketing and how symbols and words play on each other then this book is for you. I really enjoyed all the images that came along with each chapter. The book is laid out well, divided clearly with each chapter so that it's easy to follow. Definitely a steal through amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good overview of semiology, April 6, 2009

Good book written in a very english style. Somewhat hard to understand until you read it for the fourth time. This has all the information you need to understand the signs and their classifications.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and effective reading on the complex subject of Semiotics, August 19, 2010
This review is from: Visible Signs: An Introduction to Semiotics (Required Reading Range) (Paperback)
This book is a great read for anyone looking to understand the complex subject of semiotics. The author has successfully balanced such a tricky subject area with an easy to read and comprehensive style of writing and beautiful illustrations.

Semiotics is often mentioned or discussed in other design literature but few rarely venture into the depths of the subject. Crow has done this successfully, providing a detailed introduction to the subject and covering different theories relating to Semiotics.

As with all ava books I have read, Visible Signs is laid out in a beautiful format with useful illustrations and examples. The content covered in the book is well researched and summarised suitably for anybody interested in the subject. I would definitely recommend this book to any designer as it holds relevance in most fields and people studying design... this book is a great place to actually understand what this `semiotics' everyone keeps mentioning is all about.
