Review

I am always looking for fun and creative ways to display my "stuff", and Vision Box Ideas has definitely given me MANY ideas. (Now if only I had all the time in the world to do crafts!) The book is by Mark Montano. If his name sounds familiar to you (like it did to me!) it is because he was one of the designers on the TLC Show "While You Were Out" (which for a while was hosted by 2gether member Evan Farmer so I made sure to never miss an episode!) Vision Boxes are 3-D mixed media projects. The book shows you ways to make your own boxes or you can buy a deep frame at the craft store and work from that. (I think shadow boxes would probably also work.) There are a lot of cute ideas in the books with a list of supplies in order to duplicate them, but I think if I get around to making one of them I will modify it so it is more "me". The book is full color and shows images throughout the steps of creating the boxes so you can be sure not to "mess up" (however, a lot of times in crafts such as these it is often the things that are done as a mistake that really give the items a life and look of their own!)

More About the Author

Hello everyone! Thank you for your interest in my books. Well, THE BIG-A#S BOOK OF CRAFTS 2 is officially on the shelves after 2 years of writing and gluing things together. It's filled with over 150 projects made with stuff you can find almost anywhere and probably already have! Make sure to join the Big A*# Blog: http://markmontanoblogs.blogspot.com/ (I'd love to see you there). Where do I begin? I guess you should know that I was a fashion designer in New York City for most of my career. Yup, I showed with the big designers in the tents and had HUGE fashion shows which you can see on Youtube if you're interested. Through a series of terrific opportunities I became a writer and editor for Hearst Publications at Cosmo Girl! Magazine and stayed there for 10 years writing the COOL ROOM column which I turned into a book called Super Suite: The Ultimate Bedroom Makeover Guide for Girls. I also wrote a syndicated column for Knight Ridder called Make Your Mark which ran in 70 newspaper across the country. During that time I was offered a designer role on the TLC show WHILE YOU WERE OUT and after several years I became the host of the show 10 YEARS YOUNGER, also on TLC. That's the show where we put people in a glass box and guess their age. After 10 YY I was lucky enough to land more TV roles. MY CELEBRITY HOME on Style and SHE'S MOVING IN on WE TV, a recurring role on THE TONY DANZA SHOW and then MY HOME 2.0 for FOX. All during this filming I've been writing books about craft, home decor and anything I can create using commonly found objects. Look under your kitchen sink and we'll find something amazing for a project! Thanks for visiting me here and you can always contact me at MarkMontanoNYC@aol.com.

I adore this book almost as much as I adore Mark Montano! In this book, memory keeping has been taken to the next level. As a former scrapbooker who got a bit bored with what there was out there - this has revolutionized how I think about crafting my family's memories. One of my favorite things about Mark's projects is that I don't need to go to a fancy scrapbook store, or even spend any money. Mark is the master re-purposer and uses things you probably have lying around the house. In addition, the step-by-step instructions and fabulous pictures make this book uber-easy to use! You will be the envy of your friends when you display this ingenous mixed media (my favorite of all crafting) vision boxes!

I have two other Mark Montano books (The BigAss Book of Crafts 1 and 2), so when I saw that this book was coming out, I got a copy without hesitation. I'm so glad that I have it - I have already spent hours going through the projects and making notes and building a couple of my own vision boxes.

Mark Montano makes these projects all so "do-able" with his quirky stories and tips. It's pretty hard to read this book and NOT get right into making your own style of vision box. With tons of ideas on how to start, what materials to use (including inexpensive options!), and how to put your own individual twist on your vision box, this book really makes this artform accessible to everyone. Skilled artists and dabblers alike will be inspired and gently guided into making their own vision boxes. Oh, I almost forgot to mention the photos in the book - EVERY project is photographed and detailed so that you really can follow the steps to create your own. Definitely a great book for anyone who loves mixed media!!

I just got mine and can't seem to put it down! I don't know where to start so many projects to do and it gives me so much motivation and ideas!! I took it to work yesterday and had to fight my co-workers over it. There are many different projects to do from modern, traditional - you name it is in this book! I have always loved Mark Montano from his past TV shows to his books. I just love all the great designs he brings and hope he never stops with his wonderful ideas! This book is sure to bring many inspirations and ideas to your home for years to come! LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!

I'm a big fan of "vision boxes/shrines/nichos/altars" because they can express so much, whether as a way to remember someone or someplace or to remind yourself about what's important in your life. I like the simple instructions for making the boxes themselves and I like many of the themes. I don't like Montano's over the top and kitschy style. It would have been nice to see other artists' interpretation of the themes so you don't get stuck thinking you have to do it his way. I will take what I need and leave the rest.
