From the Mystic Moon to your display shelf...,

One day, on vacation, I turned on my TV and saw the first episode of Escaflowne... I was hooked right away and never missed it. I now own the movie, the soundtracks, and the complete TV series, plus two Escaflowne figures (white armour and the black version that came with the DVD-pack), so all that was missing was this transforming version.The first thing you'll notice about it is the weight of the box. No kidding, this thing is more die-cast metal than plastic and rubber. Nicely packed in a window-box you can display it easily. Of course, if you don't take it out of the box you will never see it in Dragon mode... Removing the figure and accessories from the box is a bit of a task, as you do not want to scratch the red paint of the Dragon's wings. The cape is rubber so is flexible, but still take it easy when opening this box. Once he's free, RESIST the need to transform it. First, go through the fold-out manual. Yes, it's in Japanese but the black and white photos (really!!) are quite clear, so if you pay attention and are a little patient, you should be able to turn your Guymelef into an elegant Dragon in about... 45 minutes????? OK, it didn't take me that long the first time, but it is quite the challenge. The final steps (turning the Guymelef's arms into the Dragon;s wings) are were the toughest for me. Also worthy of note, given the weight of this figure, the Dragon may have a hard time standing on its base using only its fine claws and resting most of the weight on its tail. In Guymelef mode the heavy legs and huge feet make it nearly impossible to fall. Other than the armour and the manual you get a sword (wish it was metal!), a very ugly display base and the dragon wings (left and right). I pre-ordered mine directly from Japan a few years ago, before it came out, and to this day it may be the most beautiful piece of my collection. An absolute must-have for Escaflowne fans and Mecha fans in general. Even the finest Transformers toys have a hard time matching this one in quality, finish and technical accomplishment. I promise you, this one is not a dream, it's very real. |
