Well, if you are expecting to see the Escaflowne television show retold, you are out of luck. 3.0 out of 5 stars Very different from the anime
The only thing that this manga has in common with the popular anime are the names, and perhaps Allen. Character designs and personalities are very different. The story has some similar plot threads, probably enough to interest hardcore Escaflowne fans.

Well, if you are expecting to see the Escaflowne television show retold, you are out of luck. I enjoyed the manga, but a lot of that was because I knew what to expect -- I knew this version of the manga is the shounen version: it is geared towards boys, so have more violence and mecha. Hitomi is a weaker character, but she still has her moments. Van and Allen are charming, though somewhat different from their TV selves, and Dilandau (who takes on both TV Folken and TV Dilandau's roles) is fascinating as always -- though more as I want to know how he will turn out as compared to the show. Even if you haven't seen the anime, I would recommend this book. Heck, as long as you do not expect a retelling of the anime, I would say you would enjoy this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining to Read, October 15, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Vision of Escaflowne, Book 1 (Paperback)
I liked this selection because it is fairly well written. It is the original story of Escaflowne before the anime ever came out, so the story is a little different. This disappointed me for a little bit, but I did decide that since it was the first sign of escaflowne to ever be released in Japan, I decided to except it. It is better to read if you don't even think about how different it is from the show.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is good, September 20, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Vision of Escaflowne, Book 1 (Paperback)
I have never seen the anime, so unlike some reviewers, I will not compare the series to the anime. I think this is a good series for several reasons. The characters are well developed, or to say the least, consistent, the artwork isn't bad and it's easy to tell what's going on. In some manga that I've read, the artwork was detailed, but to the point where it was next to impossible to understand what was going on. The story has many action scenes, things to make you chuckle, and even the hint of a romance. I really suggest this series to people who want some thing that doesn't focus on just one element of stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good manga but I like the anime better, January 4, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Vision of Escaflowne, Book 1 (Paperback)
Okay, I'v watched the anime The Vision of Escaflowne (Tenkuu no Escaflowne) and this manga is a very good choice for fans of the anime (it's maybe more enjoyable if you haven't seen the anime though). But be warned: character disigns are not the same! The plot is deferent! And to all Dilandau fans (myself inclued) his character disign is VERY deferent from the anime! So all Dilly-lovers (like me) should brace for impact on that one! But all that a side this is a very good manga! I, personaly, think that the anime is better as fare as plot, characters etc. but none the less this is a good manga! And also, be sure to check out the shojo version of this manga done by I think it's Yuzuru Yashiro but don't quote me on that.

I liked the anime somewhat, but the manga doesn't really have any of the same beauty or magic that was added to the anime. Still, the artwork is attractive, and it is still has a few unique elements for a fantasy manga.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great start, August 4, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Vision of Escaflowne, Book 1 (Paperback)
I picked this up after seeing the anime a year or so ago. It drew me in and I read the whole thing in about half an hour. The characters are pretty developed, and I especially love Van, whose always bitching at everyone. He's just so funny. This is a good book. I recommend

1.0 out of 5 stars Not very good, September 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Vision of Escaflowne, Book 1 (Paperback)
Although this manga in future volumes has it's moments, it's not very good. It was written and published after the anime had started. This is not the original story! For fans of Katsu Aki's works (Psychic Academy, Futari Ecchi) This was one of his first manga. The art is pretty average, the plot has very little to do with the anime. The Characters, except for the names, act Very differently. Personally, i disliked this series quite a bit. For a manga that sold only decently in japan (and if at all, only because it had the Escaflowne name), It's a wonder to me that they licensed something so... ick. Then again, with the exception of a few titles, tokyopop loves to license lots of these obscure manga.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the same, February 7, 2004
By
This review is from: The Vision of Escaflowne, Book 1 (Paperback)
I got the first one as a gift. I had previously seen all of the amnime and loved it and expected the same from the manga. I was extatic to see totaly different characters and plot, don't get me wrong, I loved the anime ones, it's just I was never able to get attached to them like I was in the manga.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book!, July 4, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Vision of Escaflowne, Book 1 (Paperback)
If you're considering buying this book because you liked the anime, DON'T! The story is, in my opinion, massacred in this manga. The characters are childish and they seem to be trying way too hard to be "cool". The overuse of slang is laughable, and the artwork isn't nearly as well drawn as in the series. Don't waste your money.
