Book Description

0805953035 978-0805953039 November 5, 2002
Vision and Reality: The Story of "Black Patti" Matilda Sissieretta Joyner Jones is a trail-blazing biography of a talented, musically-educated African-American pioneer of the concert and theatrical stages during the hostile and malignant post-Civil War era. This historical and deeply personal account will add a unique artist to the major accounts of American art history.

The first complete sociological study of Sissieretts Jones’ life, Vision and Reality expands the lists of artistic personalities and aims to increase public cognizance of their contributions, regardless of color.

I've been waiting to see Willia Daughtry's dissertation get published. This is an invaluable text, which gives theater and women's studies scholars and students greater access to Sissieretta Jones's amazing life and career. The photographs are priceless.
