A unique and scary insight,
This review is from: The Vision: The Dramatic True Story of One Man's Search for Enlightenment (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is a unique and scary insight into what we have become and what we might yet become if we don't wake up and start treating the world like a huge landfill. I'm a medical professional (RN) and by no means a granola-eater or tree hugger, but after reading this book, I stopped taking my world for granted and started giving thanks for little things, like the food I eat, the plants that give me oxygen and food, the sun that gives life to all, etc. Pay specific attention to the prophecies toward the end of the book. If they aren't a wake-up call, I don't know what is!Excellent book, highly recommended, as are any of Tom Brown's books. He's an even more powerful speaker than an author, so if you have an opportunity to see him, do it!

Worth Re-reading,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Vision (Paperback)
I have read this book twice now, I enjoyed and learnt it both times. Better the the previous two books, in 'The Vision' Tom goes deeper into his personal spirituality. The book takes you through many of Tom's life lessons building nicely into where the later books will take you. It is the kind of book where you will find something covered which will add insight to your current life circumstances.

our society,

This review is from: The Vision: The Dramatic True Story of One Man's Search for Enlightenment (Mass Market Paperback)
As Mr. Brown teaches, we are a society that kills our children to feed our Grandchildren. This book has many wonderful lessons. Although they take time (alone time)to digest, they are very rich in wisdom and make those who learn their teachings, wealthly beyond compare. I highly recommend his school as well. It will cahnge your life, not to mention your Vision

Inspiring book that I will remember forever...,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Vision (Paperback)
This book was given to me by a woman that was in a botany class I was taking. She had a feeling that I would like it, and I have never forgotten it! Though it is very simply written (it quickly becomes apparent that Mr. Brown is not a professional writer), the message of the book is outstanding! He describes some of the most important lessons he has learned in life and his Vision, which was quite profoundly similar to one I've had myself. One story, the Fisherman, struck me so deeply that I have incorporated its teaching into my life every day. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is keen to Earth and her health. You'll never regret it!

Completely Amazing,
By
This review is from: The Vision (Paperback)
This book is simply incredible. Having read "Grandfather" and "The Tracker" before this book, I found myself on an incredible journey through the Vision Quest. I found that it deepened my desire to do as Tom Brown, Jr. has done. The Vision Quest in the cave towards the end was absolutely amazing. It is probably best to read at least "The Tracker" before this one, but it's not totally necessary. A must read at any rate.

A life-changing book,
By
This review is from: The Vision (Paperback)
In 1988 I happened upon the earlier edition of this book by Tom Brown, Jr. It was one of those books that seemed to "jump off" of the book-store shelf and right into my hands. In this book Tom describes his childhood adventures of meeting and learning from an old Native American medicine man named Stalking Wolf who was also called "Grandfather." It is still today one of my favorite books, worn and dog-eared. Tom's explorations and the instructions he received from Grandfather helped me return to that core connection with my Native American relations and to renew my pilgrimage into Native American spirituality.
After reading Tom's book I telephoned him to ask about his survival training program. He described a program that sounded far too rigorous for me at that time in my life, so Tom recommended I contact the Sun Bear Tribe that offered a softer and easier program started by the late Sun Bear, a Native American medicine man. That began a pilgrimage to a wilderness program and then to a life changing vision quest, all of which has deepened and enriched my personal spiritual life. This book holds a honored and holy place on my bookshelf. I am sorry it is out of print. The Rev. Dr. Prentice Kinser III, author of LIMITLESS LIVING, A Guide to Unconventional Spiritual Exploration and Growth

Tom Brown's "The Vision..." doesn't disappoint,
By
This review is from: The Vision: The Dramatic True Story of One Man's Search for Enlightenment (Mass Market Paperback)
As a long time Tom Brown fan, The Vision: The Dramatic True Story of One Man's Search for Enlightenment, keeps with the spirit of the previous works I have read. It is my feeling the author has a true message he wishes to impart on our society, one that leads to a better understanding of our relationship with nature and life itself.
This book delves into the author's message of a return to a intimate relation with nature and putting our lives on a natural path of harmony with the planet on which we live and must share with all living entities. You will not be disappointed in the message, and the paths opened leading one to a better understanding of the way to achieve these goals. I highly recommend this work to anyone seeking these truths.

Getting out of the box of White Man culture is not so easy, for those who live in their heads. One needs to spend time in Wilderness, or solitude, alone, to let the spirit bubble up into consciousness, no book can substitute for that. I took courses many years ago with the author, which I enjoyed. Other books help with this subject-Lost Secrets of Ancient Hawaiian Huna, Volume 1 Secrets of Shamanism: Tapping the Spirit Power Within You, The Future Is Yours: Do Something About It! and ThetaHealing. There is a Sufi story about moths, and the only moth that really understands the candle is the one who gives himself totally to the light, and the light gives itself to him. This applies to shamanic work. Shamanic techniques work from the larger self, especially in service to others. Shamanism means working with the subconscious, and at times superconscious minds. It cannot be apprehended by the conscious mind, the ego. Without a strong intent of service to others, many things just don't work, or work only slightly. Whispers of the Ancients: Native Tales for Teaching and Healing in Our Time gives you some idea of how very different natives storytelling is, how stories shape the Universe, and so does House of Shattering Light: Life as an American Indian Mystic, & Journey to the Ancestral Self: The Native Lifeway Guide to Living in Harmony With Earth Mother, Book 1 (Bk.1) These are very good basic books, to getting out of the box of White Man culture. Wong Kiew Kit's books on Chi Kung show how ideas like this survive in Chinese culture. Western culture is lost in the literal, and won't look at the deeper meanings of its stories. Neville Goddard has ideas on this, as one example among many. So do Joseph Murphy The Power of Your Subconscious Mind (Empower Your Life) and Max Freedom Secret Science Behind Miracles and Serge King, in Urban Shaman. This book is not a how to, it is a story of one man's experiences, which I found riveting, I couldn't stop reading it. Some people like Brown, some don't. THis story is a good one, and it helps one get out of the head, and into the heart. VisionQuests are life changing, and they are very difficult to put in words. Brown succeeded in doing so remarkably well.

I had read Tracker several years ago and was very impressed then. But in this book, it is the first time I have run across a Native American (and I have read numerous Native American shaman/medicine men/healers) who consciously attempted to transcend his (while deep & profound) cultural spiritual beliefs in search an "ultimate or unified" meaning for all people. The intensity and constancy of his pursuit of this spiritual ultimate to the point of death (several times) was as worthy as any Eastern yogi when the Tibetans talk about "like your hair was on fire", that to achieve this is far more that a couple of sweatlodges or Vision Quests. And while the "non-dualist" will argue "there is nothing to achieve, nothing to do, nowhere to go", its's always the paradox that you seldom realize this until you've done all this "doing". It certainly gave me a strong & rededicated boost to why trying to achieve or realize the same is truly the important goal in my life.

Wonderful story,

This review is from: The Vision: The Dramatic True Story of One Man's Search for Enlightenment (Mass Market Paperback)
This is an amazing story of one man's life in oneness with nature and all things spiritual. It opened my eyes and mind to the ways of the Indians and early man. And it made me realize just how far we have strayed in our busy, consumeristic, technological society. I admire his patience, his self-reliance, his discipline, and his willingness to share this with the "outside world."
