If you're looking for insights on what it means to have a biblical marriage and family, Visionary Marriage by Rob and Amy Rienow fits the bill.

As a Gen X pastor and his wife, the authors spent much of their marriage not fulfilling the ideal biblical marriage. Their honesty is helpful to readers as they realize no marriage is even close to perfect. The Rienows have made it their mission to teach about such counter-cultural subjects as submission, God's job descriptions of husbands and wives, why God hates divorce, and creating a God-sized mission for your marriage. Despite the heavy topics, it's an easy read with Bible verses inserted in each chapter as explanation. It's also helpful to have both the husband's and wife's perspectives.

Particularly suited for engaged or newlywed couples, the book addresses the importance of a husband's leadership and love for his wife, as well as the wife's need to be respectful and kind to her husband. The book explains, without being judgmental, how exactly to accomplish these ideals or to make baby steps toward them.

"Generally speaking, as the man goes, so goes the marriage. As the marriage goes, so goes the family. As the family goes, so goes the church. As the church goes, so goes the nation," is a quote indicative of the book's content.
I would recommend the book for those seeking to have a strong Christian marriage based on biblical advice.

I love to get marriage books to keep my focus where it should be in my marriage. This is the best one that I have ever read. Most of the things that they suggest, I already do, but it's a good reminder to myself to always give those things my best effort. There are also some things that I hadn't thought about that hit me like a lightbulb when I read them. I copied Amy's vision for her home as my mission statement for my home and taped it to my mirror as a daily reminder to myself to not get so caught up in life that I lose focus of the true goal of our home. I highly recommend this book and plan on giving some away as wedding presents!

Having read many marriage books, the beginning of the book seemed like what all the other books have said. Yet as I ready about the wife's role (per Eph. 5), I was reminded and challenged by the truth of God's Word. My husband read the last half of the book with me, and we are eager to ask God for the multi-generational faithfulness Rob and Amy discuss. Seeing numbers really helped me put it in perspective -- marriage is vastly more important than our world says, and raising children to follow God is a mission worth pursuing. Thank you to the authors for writing this book!

Rob and Amy Rienow have authored an excellent, practical look at the biblical view of marriage. Both have advanced degrees in theology, yet both have openly shared their need and pursuit of training to excel at what it means to be a godly husband and wife, father and mother. In Visionary Marriage, you go on the journey with them as they read Scriptures and determine to faithfully obey the clear teaching of God's Word.

The Rienows ask a provocative question - "Why Marriage?" Sadly, many cannot answer this question, at least not with any depth. The Rienows also admit that even though "God created the family as the fundamental institution upon which all human life and civilization rest...we never gave it serious theological thought." They correct this by delving into the biblical teachings on the family.

They first consider the role and responsibilities of the husband (love, serve, lead) and then the wife (help, reverence, training). For the first time in my readings on family and family ministry, I've finally found authors who have dealt carefully and biblical with Titus 2 (which is why "training" might be an unfamiliar responsibility to many). It is clear that the Rienows have concern for reading and proclaiming the whole counsel of God on marriage and family life.

In the latter half of the book, they address "becoming one." In their words, "God wants your job descriptions to combine together for a shared mission and purpose." With this in mind, the Rienows provide fresh perspective on the mission of spiritual formation, encouraging one another in the faith, and raising godly children. These chapters not only provide a clear outlook, but they are tremendously practical in their approach.

This book deal came at a great time, as my wife and I were looking at ways to grow both in our relationship with each other and with God. I give a lot of time and thought to many areas of my work-life, but planning for our marriage/family/children's future was something I simply took as it came...figuring we had a "big picture", and that was working well. The value I was able to communicate to my wife by discussing the "right now" aspects and near future of what we desire for these areas was huge. Thanks for the important reminders!!!

I bought this book to read with a group of friends from our church. The book had a traditional view of marriage, but it was great that the authors used scripture to support their ideas of what a visionary marriage should look like. The most helpful part of this book was the chapter on children. I recommend this book to couples who are looking to find a real purpose to their marriage. It offers good food for thought and action.
