I had the 9020 version so I decided to get the upgrade. All the features are nice, but I'm getting lines whenever I set the scan at anything higher than 100 dpi. The scan bar stops and starts instead of having a continuous scan. I'm trying to find if it has patch or someway to repair it, as I think I've read it does. I'll give an update if I do.
EDIT 12/17/07: I've since discovered that the main reasons I was having problems with this scanner is that the computer had trouble accessing the scanner information due to a slow processor speed. If you have a computer without adequate processing speed, the scanner bar will actually stop until this information has been sent. This actually takes only a split second, but it's long enough to form lines on your image. If you have the misfortune of using a computer that is inadequate, the scanner will refuse to work and give false error messgaes. CONCLUSION: This is a great scanner as long as you let it work on the level it was intended. If you do buy this product, make sure your computer is reasonable new (within 2 years old or updated).

I bought the Visioneer OneTouch 9420 about a year ago. It ran beautifully for the two times that I used it over a period of 2 months, but then the scanner died. The first two technicians I was subjected to at Visioneer were extremely rude, sounding as if they coundn't be bothered. They insinuated that I must have loaded it improperly (even after it worked very well initially). After much hassle with the company, they agreed that the product was defective, and eventually replaced it.
I've had the replacement for 8 months of occasional use, and again the results were very good, even with the OCR. But a couple of weeks ago the second scanner died on me. Now I'm going through the same runaround with the company. Both times I've consulted my local professional computer guru who agrees that there definitely is a problem with the product. After 21 years as a systems analyst and PC applications trainer, I resent being treated as a dummy, and can't deal with this company any longer. I'm ready to ditch this product, and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Poor Tech Service - - Don't buy one,

Our government office has several Visoneer scanners, so I thought I'd get one for home, since I already understand how to use it. The 9420 I received would not unlock, no matter what I did. A call to tech support put me on hold for 9 minutes, then I got a recording telling me it would be another 15 minutes. This is not a toll free call, so I hung up. I then called Customer Service, and was told she could put me back in line for tech support -- in which I replied -- give me an RMA -- I'm sending it back. She emailed me a prepaid UPS label, and I sent it back. VIsoneer's tech support line really does suck. I just ordered a Canon.

Purchased to replace Visioneer 8700. Turns out that many of the things I liked about the 8700 are not on the 9420. On the 8700 you could press the SCAN button on the scanner and have images stack into Paperport. This was done in Visioneers .MAX format. The 9420 does not scan in the Visioneer .MAX format and scanned documents cannot be stacked without going through a much longer procedure each time.
Also, scanning is much slower with the 9420. Took over 50 seconds to scan 2 Black & White pages at 200 DPI. I also miss having a FAX button on scanner.

I purchsaed this scanner on line and it worked for 6 months. then I got vertical ines on my pictures. After loading and unloading the drivers and software 10 times and receiving a replacement unit from Visioneer, it still has lines. I even tried it on another computer with no luck. Its software problem is either so imbetted that it can't be removed or another unit is just bad. I have always had good luck with visioneer in the past, but I have given up on this one.

BE CAREFUL,
This review is from: Visioneer OneTouch 9420 USB (Office Product)
Be VERY careful when purchasing anything from Visioneer. I own a visioneer One Touch 9220, and just learned they have NO intention of providing a driver for VISTA. Not only that, I had to PAY to learn that. Their corporate greed exceeds belief. If you think you might, someday in the future, be upgrading your computer, I would have to suggest buying some other scanner

...But the workings on the inside leave a lot to be desired. I bought two of these, the first sending back because it left scan lines consistantly throughout the scan, no matter how high the resolution was set. Thinking I had a faulty product, I simply exchanged it. The second one did the same thing! I was very disappointed in the quality of the scans, and don't recommend this scanner for anyone who is half-way serious about quality. I have a photo restoration and manipulation business, and this scanner doesn't cut it by a long shot. Serious scanners... stay away! Buy something else (like a CanoScan 8600F) that is a big bang for your buck within this price range. Better yet, if you can afford a more expensive machine, just remember that you really do get what you pay for!

This is my second visioneer scanner. The first was great and lasted years. This one lasted 36 days and about 100 scans, just enough to get beyond Amazon's return policy. Debating whether to try to get it fixed or throw it out and go back to Canon.

I am very satisfied with my purchase. I had a Visioneer scanner before and I was pleased with it. However, I recently upgraded my computer and I needed a scanner that would work with Windows Vista.
