Don't waste your time,

This review is from: Visioneer OneTouch 8900 USB Scanner (Office Product)
After installing everything as instructed, a message to unlock the scanner kept coming up. After numerous attempts of locking and unlocking I checked the website and followed the recommendations there with no success. They don't have a toll free number where you can talk to a representative and you really can't get any help on their website. The scanner looks nice but too bad it didn't work.

I was leery of purchasing this scanner because of these reviews. But I thought the price was right. The scanner was basically dead on arrival. After it was installed I kept getting an error message that the scanner was locked. It was not locked. Visioneer's automated support web site brought this issue up with the first search, so it must be a common problem for this model. Their only recommendation is to ensure you have the right drivers ( I did) and to plug the unit directly to the wall outlet and not a power strip. Tried that. Their next solution is to return it to the dealer for exchange. I would say definitely do not buy this model.

I bought this scanner a couple of years ago and have just installed Windows Xp and was having problems with the PaperPort Software. I installed the updated driver for XP, and it is working. I was told since this scanner is old I would have to pay $2.00 a minute for techinical support for the scanner. It is not the scanner I was having problems with but their software for which there is no support! They have got to expect problems with newer operating systems. By the way, all numbers for visioneer are toll calls, even their order number. It took over ten minutes to even get to a person on the order number. I can't believe these guys are still in business!!! They don't even have a place on their website to leave feedback by e-mail. Face it, they just don't want to hear from us. I will never buy from Visioneer again!

One star is too good for this product..ive had a visioneer 8700 USB about a year.. it just died..the scanner keeps telling me to unlock the scan head.. i physically removed the lock.. despite restarting the pc, reinstalling etc etc.. the fault persists.. The online help is useless, there are no specific references to the fault though i have found a large number of references ( but no solutions to it) on the web.. I cant reccomend the scanner.. there are equal and better second hand scanners on the market.. that dont suffer this fault. I cant recommend the visioneer online support.. i still have a dead scanner.. I cant really think of anything good to say about visioneer.. i wish i had never wasted money on it...

1st one died, the 2nd one is currently dying...,

The first Visioneer scanner I bought died after a year. So stupid me, I decided to get another one. Now the 2nd one is starting to do weird things like not scanning, the customize window keeps popping up to 'customize' it again, and so on. In simple words, it is dying. Don't buy this product!

I used to love Visioneer :(,
This review is from: Visioneer OneTouch 8900 USB Scanner (Office Product)
I had demoed Visioneer scanners for 3 years at a "computer store" and was always impressed with the speed, quality and price of them.I happily bought my own Visioneer 8900 as I liked the quick access buttons, the quality, and the price. The installation was quick and simple and I was scanning right away. Did about 5 high quality scans and everything was great. I hadn't used the scanner for a couple of months (it was off) so I fired it up again and I got these ugly green lines all throughout the scan. I rebooted and tried again and the same thing happened over and over. Then it would lock up on me saying the scanner lock was "locked" but I checked and it was not locked. Downloaded the latest drivers, installed them, and tried again. It still has those ugly lines. (I use Windows XP Pro) I don't know why after only a couple of months it died on me but I am disappointed in Visioneer. I can't recommend this scanner based on my experience with it but with only two reviews I would research it more.

6 Months Later, Looking for a New Scanner,

First of all, if you're a Mac user, don't even bother. Move on. This is not a Mac (OSX or 9) friendly scanner. When I tried it just out of the box, I was very happy with its performance. Now, however, I can't even get it to scan--this machine will only operate with its original power supply (although Visioneer will happily send you a new one for only [more money). This product is not for those with a tendency to lose things! It boils down to this: Decent hardware. Software is lacking. Very bulky scanner. Tech support is a bargain at $2 per minute (on this model).

Lousy software = useless scanner,

AAAAAAAAGH!This scanner's optical qualities are great, the problem is the absolute piece of garbage that comes with it masquerading as scanner software. It's a pain to configure, and it's a pain to convert scanned images into the formats you want...for example, a simple JPEG format! Plus once the software is loaded, it automatically boots up every time you turn your PC on, which will add a good 15 seconds to your system boot-up time! Even more annoying is the fact that whenever you have it turned off, every time you insert a CD or floppy into your computer, it will make your PC search for the scanner connnection...there is NO way to turn this off! I found the scanner software for my Hewlett Packard all-in-one machine ten million times easier to use, and can't even begin to tell you how much I wish I had gone for an HP scanner instead. Stay well away from this piece of junk! I wish I could give this thing a BELOW ZERO star rating!

Out of the box it had an intermittant problem. You get an error box that says the optical module is locked. Only it isn't. Go to the web site and they have a virtual troubleshooter that is absolutely of no use. Call the company customer service and they tell you to call tech support,(at $2.00 per minute on a 900 line. Because this is out of production, they don't care. Definitely don't buy this for a quarter. It would be a waste of a good quarter

Has worked fine for 3 years.,
This review is from: Visioneer OneTouch 8900 USB Scanner (Office Product)
I have the 8920 which is the same scanner with a slide scanner...it is entirely possible that they have COMPLETELY different hardware under the hood, but I doubt it.No problems...but one curious issue. The glass lid is not designed for being pushed on, and the holders (on the left side as you look at it) can come loose. If they do, or if you press down on the glass...like if you are scanning a book...that can stop the scan head, and of course the computer will assume the lock is still on. This has happened to me a couple of times. If you shake it (gently) you will hear the holders (little plastic pieces) on the bottom. Yes it is a silly and sloppy design, HOWEVER, put them back in place and press on...mine didn't drop loose until after 2.5 years of use. |
