Amazon.com Review
The basic features of the Visioneer OneTouch 7600 USB scanner are clearly designed and priced for small business and personal use. We really liked the quick-and-easy setup, and in just a few clicks we were on our way to scanning photos, color images, and black text.

Five simple buttons access convenient copy and printing, faxing, and scanning directly into Visioneer's obligingly friendly PaperPort software. After warming up for about 45 seconds, the OneTouch 7600 USB scanner recognizes over 68 billion colors internally with 36-bit color depth. Featuring an optimal 600 x 1,200 dpi and a 2,400 dpi software-enhanced resolution, you will be pleased with its crisp and consistently reliable color and photo-realistic scanning. We found the preset resolutions functional as a means of improving scan speed and creating smaller files, but we chose to change to higher resolutions for all types of scans. The character recognition program (OCR) is a great plus that allows you to scan text, an amendment not found on all basic scanners.

The Visioneer OneTouch 7600 USB scanner is a good choice for a standard scanner in a household with basic usage. It weighs less than 10 pounds and moves easily to a shelf or closet for temporary storage if you're short on desk space. And with one-step setup, this scanner is very practical. It comes with PaperPort software on CD-ROM, Visioneer OCR, PictureWorks PhotoEnhancer, Visioneer's WebPublisher Link, and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, all of which install in the first couple of clicks. Finally, it's good to note that the installation guide is eminently readable and useful for problem solving.

Pros:

  • Inexpensive
  • Good crisp quality color scanning
  • Very easy to set up and use

Cons:

  • 45-second warm-up each time you scan
  • Not equipped to scan transparencies
  • Relatively slow scan times
  • Some seeming incompatibility with newer editions of Windows 98

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid buy for an entry-level scanner., November 2, 1999
By A Customer
This is the same scanner as the 7600 USB, except with a pass-thru parallel port connection instead of USB. I bought it to replace a broken HP 5100c that I quite liked until a $200 part inside it just broke one day.

The Visioneer installs incredibly easily, and makes really crisp, vibrant scans using the higher dpi settings. 300 and 600dpi scans on the Visioneer are beautiful, but the lower-res scans (100-200dpi) have very visible scan lines in them.

The Visioneer takes longer to warm up, and longer to scan an image, than the HP did. But at half the price, it's a good deal for entry-level or SOHO use.

This was actually my third choice: I didn't want to get burned by another HP device breaking on me, so I bought a Microtek ScanMaker V6-USL. It installed fine, but crashed the system every time I tried to test or use it. I called their tech support every 5 minutes for 3 hours during normal business hours, and they never once answered the phone or let me leave a message. I took it back and got the Visioneer, which is doing the trick fine so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy hook up, easy to operate and excellent results., November 1, 1999
By A Customer
I had first bought an other brand of scanner but before I even took it out of the box, I read a review stating that it had poor color results. At the advice of a friend, I tried this one. Except for a little confusion regarding the configeration settings, I'm most pleased with this scanner.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great Scanner IF you don't have NeoMagic Video Card..., November 7, 1999
By A Customer
I bought this scanner. It worked just wonderfully on my wife's ancient Toshiba Laptop. The software is a bonus. But on my Dell Lattitude CPI, a Pentium II machine that is my everyday computer, it scanned blue and pink with the vague outline of the picture scanned.

After much research, it turns out if you have a notebook with a NeoMagic video card (Acer, Compaq, Dell , HP, Toshiba, Gateway and NEC from the NeoMagic web site), any Visioneer with a 'button' doesn't work - not just the 7600 One Touch, but even the 6100B, which has a single button. I upgraded drivers, etc. There are no fixes. I brought back the 7600, and bought a Canon FB620B. It's slower, but it scans photos very well, and it will work with most laptops.
