Visioneer Strobe 500
Use Nuance PaperPort to organize digital files that you can quickly find, use and share

When your office is not contained within four walls and can be anywhere you are, you need a scanner with flexibility. Healthcare, real estate, construction, financial services, insurance are just some of the occupations the Strobe 500 was designed for. Whether scanning contracts, forms, receipts, photos, ID cards, handwritten notes or virtually any document of varying size or complexity, the Strobe 500 does its job so you can do yours.

Visioneer OneTouch

Visioneer OneTouch is an easy to use utility that connects the buttons on the Strobe scanner with a powerful set of scanner settings to greatly improve the efficiency of your workflow--so that with one touch, the document is scanned automatically to email, or Word, or your printer, or simply a file folder.

Scan to a Text Searchable PDF

If you can't search your scanned documents by their content, you might as well be looking at paper again. The Strobe 500 can scan automatically to searchable PDF. It preserves the integrity of the scanned page so that layout, signatures, logos, photos, etc., remain intact, but the text is OCR'd so that you can search the document by its content. This is very powerful when looking for a single document among hundreds or thousands.

Kofax VRS technology

The Strobe 500 integrates Kofax VRS image enhancement technology into the OneTouch scanning process. VRS is the gold-standard in image improvement technology. Imperfect originals are automatically turned into perfect scans that are easier to read for the human eye and the computer's eye. OCR results are dramatically improved, file size is decreased and scans look as clear as the originals. And every page is custom corrected automatically so you can batch together clean, laser quality documents with your imperfect originals. The results are amazing.

Nuance PaperPort

Millions of professionals rely on PaperPort to save time and money by transforming paper documents into searchable digital documents. PaperPort combines the efficiency of document management, the convenience of superbly scanned documents and the power of creating PDF files, to bring a new level of operational proficiency to you organization.

Nuance OmniPage Pro

Provides a precise OCR and layout retention solution, quickly turning scanned documents into editable, formatted text. The text can then be used in virtually any word processing, desktop publishing or web publishing program.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful addition to any office! November 1, 2010
    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I am often in need of scanning multiple documents, and the multi-sheet feeders of the various printers that I have had have fallen short--in a big way. They jam and you end up having to SLOWLY scan each document separately, flipping the docs over and having a separate file for each side/document. Tedious to say the least.
This product, on the other hand, is SO FAST and reliable! I was super surprised at how fast the documents not only fed through the scanner, but how quickly they processed into editable documents on the computer. The unit is quiet and smooth, and looks great in the office--not too obtrusive. (I hooked it up to a Dell PC with 12 gB of ddr3 RAM, 1tB hard drive, running multiple applications, and it didn't hang up once.)
The software included is extensive, and easy to maneuver. They come with detailed user manuals (on a CD). The unit contained all the necessary plugs and usb cables for both US and international use. You can even power the scanner via usb, so you're not stuck if you're needing it on the road for use with your laptop. Very nice!
I am really impressed with this unit. If you need to scan documents on a regular basis, and are sick of jamming, slow printers with useless software interfaces, this is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Precision-made duplex scanner easy to use April 17, 2011
    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The Visioneer Strobe 500 is a remarkable little sheet-fed scanner, which comes with ScanSoft PaperPort 11 and ScanSoft OmniPage 15 as well as custom OneTouch 4.0 software and both TWAIN and WIA (Windows-specific) drivers.

The unit is amazingly small but has the feel of an extremely well-built machine with precision-made parts. It comes with a power cord with inline transformer (like a laptop) but includes five different power cables for different countries. The scanner unit snaps off the page-feed unit to make the scanner an extremely portable - 3" x 2-1/2" x 11-1/2" (plus cables). The two pieces fit together with tight tolerances - again, a sign of great design.

Installation instructions are extremely clear. Visioneer realizes that most people won't even follow the simplified picture Quick-Install card so they have the 4-bullet notice under "Before You Begin" (e.g. No not plug in the USB cable until after you install the software.)

The installation went OK as far as it goes - similar to the installation of a multifunction printer which comes with OEM software from other manufacturers. There are several stages where you just pray that the installer doesn't hang but everything went fine. One point I found confusing was the "optional" installation of OmniPage OCR software - why is this optional? Another confusion occured midway through the install when the software required me to check "close" instead of "next" - it was clearly not finished and I thought it the installer would, well, close. After the successful install, the software automatically checked the web for updates.

The User's Guides on the CD are a mish-mosh of many pdf's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very fast and a great size December 18, 2010
    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Most of my document scanning at this point is antique books that are falling apart, old photographs and old recipe cards.
This scanner set up very quickly and the instructions are clear and easy to follow. I use a Windows 7 system, and from taking the unit out of the box to running it took less than a half hour.
The software included is very easy to use and allows saving in a few formats including that all important PDF format.
It's fast. For a unit this size, it's incredibly fast. It will scan a 2 sided recipe card in less than a minute, and a page from an old book in just a little more time than that. It's reasonably quiet.
For recipe cards and photographs, use the front feeder rather than the ADF.
It's also very portable. If you remove the scanner from the dock, you can slip it in a briefcase or a messenger bag with a laptop easily. Just use the front feed for document scanning. It's a little slower using the USB cord for power instead of the power cord.
Several types of power cords are included.
I'm very happy with the speed, performance and size of this. It is a good thing for businesses that have a lot of documents to scan, and for individuals that have a lot of documents they want safely preserved in digital format.

    3.0 out of 5 stars A BIT PRICY FOR A SCANNER February 18, 2011
    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The great thing about this scanner is that it can be portable and the docking station adds a 20-page automatic document feeder feature. However, trying to attach and remove the scanner can take some time and patience. If you can get over that issue, the rest of setup is simple. A nice feature in setup is telling whether to get power from the wall or from the USB, this works nice for portability. The end result is the scanning ability; it is quick and can scan to a pdf format in lighting speed. I would recommend this scanner for those looking for speed and portability; otherwise, I think you can find something just as good for a lot less money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Strobe 500 not what I had hoped it would be October 6, 2011
    Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased this product to use with Paperport and Omnipage software that I already own. I use Quicken and scan all receipts and attach them to the transaction in Quicken.

    Pros
I was drawn to this scanner by the ability to take the small "engine" out of the feeder and take it on the road.
The duplex feature when it is able to feed to paper is fantastic. This scanner will scan both sides is one pass

    Cons
After owning this for many months I have learned that the biggest downside of this scanner is it poor feeding which is significant when you are purchases a sheet fed scanner!

It sometimes will fail to grab plain 8.5 X 11 paper.

If a receipt has a fold or wrinkle it will jam or turn side ways. Other scanners have not had this problem.

    Summary
If you are planning to scan more than just stacks of standardized paper this scanner is likely not for you.
