Pros and Cons,
By
This review is from: Visioneer Ultra-Slim OneTouch 7400 USB Photo Scanner (74007D-WU) (Office Product)
For 4 years, I've owned a Visioneer 7300 VISIONEER 73007DWU SCANNER VISIONEER 7300 1200 DPI, which is the immediate predecessor to the 7400. The 7400 has essentially the same specs and appearance as the 7300. The difference? Only the 7400 supports Vista.
Pro: it works OK in light duty home service- I use it mostly for imaging receipts and so on for TurboTax and Quicken. But there are 2 Cons: 1) closing Quicken always generates an error from the Visioneer software complaining about qw.exe - it's benign except for having to close the dialog box each time 2) Visioneer has no plans to update the 7300 driver to spport Vista- will the 7400 be similarly stranded in 2 years or so when MS replaces Vista?

Good scanner for paper documents - not the greatest for photos,

This review is from: Visioneer Ultra-Slim OneTouch 7400 USB Photo Scanner (74007D-WU) (Office Product)
This is a great scanner for full-size paper documents. Not so great for photos if you want really good, clear, crisp photos. If you just want to slap a photo on the web or your digital picture frame, it's fine. It is very nicely made. The features I liked the most are that it is a USB connection, and that it will scan a full-sized sheet of paper even though it is small and thin. It's barely bigger than an 8.5X11 sheet of paper. The photo editing software (Photoimpression) that comes with it isn't that great either, but adequate once you get the hang of it. I can set the resolution for 300 dpi prior to scanning, and the photo still isn't that great. I also can't get the "one touch" function to work either. It did work the first time I tried it, but then wouldn't work anymore. No problem though, you can just control it from the menu on your computer monitor. It also doesn't seem to like to be disconnected and reconnected. Everytime I've done that, it won't work and just gives error messages until you reboot your computer. As simple as it seemed to be, I did encounter a problem when trying to load the driver (and I am a 30+ year IT person); it didn't seem to load entirely successfully, but works. If you want a scanner that is compact; that connects via USB; and that will scan full-sized documents and do a decent job on photos, you can't go wrong with this one for the price.

Cannot believe how simple it was to install(5-6 minutes). Scanned documents are stored in Adobe Reader and as clear as the originals. I haven't tried scanning pictures, yet. I love it!

I had a HP scanner that lasted less than a year and it went clang clang clang and quit scanning. That HP one was a BRAND NEW ONE. I'm sick of buying new scanners so frequently so I decided to take a chance on this beauty. Not only does it NOT REQUIRE A PLUG and runs off of USB entirely, it scans much better than my plug-in (and USB plug too) HP scanner. The installation was a snap and it works great. I have Windows 7 with a 64 bit system so yes I highly recommend it. The dealer sent this ULTRA FAST using UPS and I can't believe I already got it and it's running just fine at such a great price. KUDOS to this fine product and the dealer Dahmart!!

This seems to be the only scanner that will work with 64 bit Vista OS. We bought an HP, which is the computer brand, but it didn't work. All we had to do with this was download drivers for 64 bit and we were back in business.
The software is easy to use, but that's the only type of scanner I've ever used. Highly recommend for 64 bit Windows Vista OS.

Does not work with Ubuntu Linux 10.10,

I understand that Visioneer never claimed it would work with Linux. That's why I am giving it 3 stars, after my limited use of it with Windows.
Will not plug and play in ubuntu 10.10. Spent time overriding "Visioneer OneTouch 7300" in /etc/sane.d/gt68xx.conf. Pulled off Cis3r5b1.fw from an Windows installation. With xsane running as root, scanner would detect. However scanned images have a red hue. You may have to tweak the afe values in gt68xx conf. It is time Visioneer provided drivers for linux.

Works with Windows 7 (Better than the 9520),

I bought this to replace the Visioneer OneTouch 9520 Photo scanner (95201D-WU) I bought for my second computer upgrade to Windows 7 and it works some what better on the W7 OS than the 9520 model did; not perfect but better..
Like the Visioneer OneTouch 9520 Photo scanner (95201D-WU), I still get random error messages during the preview scan and I still can not get it to crop the image automatically like the Scanner and Camera Wizard did in XP Pro. I also bought this model for my first Windows 7 upgrade to replace the 7300 model that was not compatible and it seems to work fine on it (but I don't do a whole lot of scanning on it like I do my work computer).. It is a space saver compared to the bulky 9520 model.. Overall, it will suffice for now.

My first scanner was a Visioneer and I was very happy with it. This time around, the software didn't install properly, but I'm running Vista Home Premium, so it's very likely the problem has nothing to do with Visioneer.

Total Garbage,

This scanner is worthless. I bought it NEW and a vertical black line appeared with the very first scan. I reinstalled the driver and cleaned the screen, but the vertical black line would still not go away. In fact, choosing the "scan" option now resized my desktop and did not allow me to use other applications until I fully closed the "scan" toolbox. Save yourself the frustration and get a decent scanner that's at least moderately expensive.
