Editorial Reviews

Review

“Mr. Grey’s paintings, as detailed and anatomically accurate as medical illustrations, present man as an archetypal being struggling toward cosmic unity . . . Grey’s vision of a flawed but perfectible mankind stands as an antidote to the cynicism and spiritual malaise prevalent in much contemporary art.”
(New York Times )

“Alex’s work, like all great transcendental art, is not merely symbolic or imaginary: it is a direct invitation to recognize and realize a deeper dimension of our very own being.”
(Ken Wilber, author of The Marriage of Sense and Soul )

“Alex Grey is making some of the most beautifully refined imagist work in the country today.”
(

Walter Hopps, senior curator, Guggenheim Museum and the Menil Collection

)

“Alex Grey’s art will bring you face to face with your soul and move you to a new level of enlightenment.”
(

Deepak Chopra, author of The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success

)

"Alex Grey's visionary art gives form to what shamans see only with the eyes of the Soul. His work opens portals that allow us to perceive the luminous nature of life and of all creation."
(Alberto Villoldo Ph.D., psychologist, shaman, and author of Dance of the Four Winds and Island of the Sun? )

"The exquisite immediacy and compelling power of his work clearly comes from direct experience of the sacred and demonstrates why Alex Grey is so widely regarded as one of the great visionary and spiritual artists of our time."
(Roger Walsh, MD, Ph.D., Professor, University of California and author of Essential Spirituality: The Seven Central Practices )

"Alex Grey's paintings breathe new life into the deadened soul of modern consciousness. You will find in this work the intensity of someone who is not just doing his own personal art but is consciously participating in the evolutionary unfolding toward a more integral world. In a more integral world, inner and outer experiences, spiritual and material realities, become a single stream of unified energy. In Alex's work, this crystallization has already occurred."
(Suzi Gablik, author of Has Modernism Failed? and The Re-enchantment of Art )

" . . . it is only Grey's inquisitiveness, his desire to understand the cosmic metastructure of humanity, that drives him to such a rigorously detailed account of the typically unseen."
(Artforum )

"It is the light that is sublime in Grey's oeuvre--which is the most important innovation in religious light since the Baroque--and that makes the mundane beings in them seem sublime, in every realistic detail of their exquisite being."
(Donald Kuspit, professor of Art History and Philosophy at SUNY-Stony Brook )

"All Grey's work is both personal and universal, intending to provoke an experience of the divine in the viewer . . . He sees through the surface of things and paints the soul like a seraphim, a pure consciousness, a body of light."
(Raw Vision )

"Grey has had a great social impact outside the confines of the art world."
(New Art Examiner )

“O swiftly spinning 21st-century Human! We’ve already missed out on Rumi, Blake, Swedenborg, and Gibran, but we’ve been sent a comforter for our time flowering from the same vine. His name is Alex Grey.”
(Rebecca Alban Hoffberger, director of the American Visionary Art Museum, Baltimore, Maryland )

". . . [his paintings] vibrate, radiate, and touch a core of understanding about humanity that resonates deeply."
(Susan Dobra, Magical Blend's Natural Beauty & Health, February 2004, Issue94 )

“Grey’s anatomically detailed paintings amplify as much as they dissect, paradoxically intensifying the reductionist clarity of the scientific eye into a blazing, luminescent mysticism.”
(The Village Voice )

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome BUT misleading sell!, June 23, 2008
This review is from: Visions (Hardcover)
The books are awesome for sure BUT I think Amazon should warn buyers that this "book" Visions is actually a hard case containing the books Transfigurations and Sacred Mirrors so that people don't buy both or all of them (as was the case here).
(In fact, on the Amazon page it is recommended to buy Visions and Transfigurations....)

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Alex Grey Fans, September 11, 2007
This review is from: Visions (Hardcover)
This is an amazing collection. If you don't mind spending the money this is the best option for the complete Alex Grey experience. It comes with both of his books in beautiful hardcover format. They aren't just all of his pictures either. There are many, many side articles and writings with pictures describing many fascinating things about his life and works and other teachings. Plus, you get the 6 glossy drawings you can frame on your wall. The book contains close-ups of many of the paintings so you can see the incredible detail put into them. My only complaint is that the little lock on the outside of the whole hardcover casing can be hard to lock because of the books on the inside pushing out, but this is a minor detail. I highly recommend this for anyone craving the complete Alex Grey experience in hardcover.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice collection of Alex Grey's work, April 22, 2009
This review is from: Visions (Hardcover)
Visions comes in a hard case that includes both Sacred Mirrors and Transfigurations (so if you buy this item make sure you're not also buying any of these two books). Also, in the case were 6 (if I remember correctly) frameable A4-size posters of work by Alex Grey, but keep in mind that these are not prints of his most known works but rather some new material.

I bought this combo mainly for Sacred Mirrors, which includes the artwork of Alex Grey that I admire the most. This work is beautiful and inspiring, it seems as if Grey managed to depict the human being and the 'energetic' entity of the self in one clear, vivid and transparent image. These works have motivated me after watching the video about the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors.

Transfigurations contains some grotesque photos that I don't really like to look at; the artwork is nice but I think no match to the Sacred Mirrors series.

Both books include text as well as images, i.e. do not expect to have a book full of images, there's a lot of text inside about the artist and his work so you get to know them better.

I would definitely give 5 stars to Sacred Mirrors and maybe 4 stars to Transfigurations, but I'd still rate the combination as a 5-star as a whole. The print quality is also excellent.
