Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Visions of the Arawaks [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The tape starts by saying there are no full-blooded Arawaks in existence. Because their numbers were annihilated, it would have been nice to learn about their history and culture. But that is not what you get here. This is a bunch of poetry backed up by modern paintings of what artists IMAGINE that Arawaks looked like.
The work starts by saying South Americans were the first to travel to Caribbean Islands. Thus, it was interesting to see how the indigenous people presented looked more like those in the Amazon, than those in Central America or what would later be called the Southeast United States. However, I really think the artists had no Arawak paintings from which to draw, so she or he just stole Amazon images hook, line, and sinker. Some say certain adults do a certain activity while watching "The Teletubbies." This was a psychodelic work and I can imagine viewers doing the same activity. I would have loved to have learned about Arawaks, but that is most certainly not what one gets here. |
