A "Visionary" 70s Classic From The Prince,
By A Customer
This review is from: Visions (Audio CD)
"Visions," originally released in 1976 with a different cover and a slightly different tracklisting, stands among the crowning works of the late, great D. Brown. There's a consistency and focus to these 10 tracks that makes one long for the glory era of roots reggae. Check out this album, along with Dennis' other masterpieces like "Wolf & Leopards," "Words Of Wisdom," "Super Reggae & Soul Hits" (despite the title, an original and superlative 1972 album cut when he was just 15) and "Just Dennis." You won't be sorry!!

The Crown Prince at the height of his powers.,

This review is from: Visions (Audio CD)
Dennis Brown was inarguably one of reggae's finest male vocalists. Along with Alton Ellis, Slim Smith, and close friend Gregory Isaacs he also was one of the most influential. Visions finds Brown paired with production team The Mighty Two (Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson) in the late seventies when all were at the top of their respective forms. In other words this album is an undisputed classic featuring the mind breaking tracks Milk & Honey, Malcom X, and Deliverance Will Come. If you're a reggae fan in any way or just a fan of great soul singing you owe it to yourself to experience Dennis Brown's Visions.

This is my favorite Dennis Brown CD. Dennis was in his early 20's when he made this gem, but his lyrics and his voice are very mature. There is not a weak moment on this. You can feel Dennis's pain in his voice on these songs. Just as good if not better than any Bob Marley's album. I believe if he got the right exposure he would not have been the Crowne Pince but yet The King of reggae. A true.

Another example of the fruitful time he spent with Joe Gibbs, Dennis Brown's "Visions" is considered by many in reggae circles to be his finest acheievement. It is hard to argue this point, as his soulful voice was reaching its peak of maturity, as well his level of songwriting.Anchored by the amazing tracks "Stay at Home," "Malcolm X," and "Jah Can Do It," Brown's uncanny balance of love and message songs create a perfect balance on this album that he rarely matched. This album is a classic, and no good reggae collection can be without it. |
