Book Description

May 8, 2004

Lourdes, Fatima, Medjugorje—millions of people of all faiths and nations flock to Marian shrines around the world, a testament to the enduring human desire for transcendence and meaning. Visions of the "Luminous Lady in White" abound; at Zeitun, Egypt, she was witnessed by hundreds of thousands of Jews, Muslims, and both Protestant and Orthodox Christians. Courtney Roberts adds a new and fascinating dimension to these miraculous sightings by exploring them through the perspective of astrology.

Going beyond personal, cultural, and religious differences, Roberts places visionaries and their sightings into a cosmic framework. Using documented dates and times, along with easy-to-follow astrological illustrations and terms, she demonstrates how cosmic forces may have influenced these remarkable events and the people involved. In chart after chart, she reveals prominent aspects among the signs of Virgo, Cancer, the Moon, and the Nodes of the Moon. Her findings do not diminish the divine nature of the visions, but expand upon their relevance, reaching across the divide that separates Catholics from other Christians, and Christians from those of other faiths, all the while reconnecting Christianity to its true roots.

4.0 out of 5 stars Visions of the Virgin Mary, June 18, 2004

Beth M. Guy (Portland, ME USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Visions of the Virgin Mary: An Astrological Analysis of Divine Intercession (Paperback)
This work is a well-researched and well-documented account of nineteenth and twentieth century visions and sightings of the Virgin Mary, including the familiar Bernadette at Lourdes and Fatima.
Although this book is not intended to be an astrology text, there is a comprehensive glossary of astrological terms as well as basic explanations of various astrological principles interspersed throughout the text. Thus, a reader need not be familiar with astrological concepts in order to understand and enjoy the text. The stories of the sightings are very rich in detail.

Although the book carries a subtitle of "An Astrological Analysis of Divine Intercession", the analysis boils down to a preponderance of Virgo and Cancer in the 44 charts involved as well as a prominence of the Nodes of the Moon. While the author fully acknowledges that more questions are raised than are answered, the subtitle suggests that more astrological commonalities would be presented in such a book. The conclusion about Virgo and Cancer as the primary signs involved in such phenomena is hardly surprising. Anyone familiar with astrology knows that Virgo represents the archetype of the "Virgin" and Cancer, the "Mother".

Roberts really summarizes in terms of her philosophical perspective about the place of such visions within different cultures and religions. The basic message is that regardless of religious perspective or culture, we should all get along. There's nothing wrong with that message, and it is the main one that Roberts wants us to take away from her work. Her accounts of the Marian visions are rich, compelling, fascinating, and enjoyable. From a purely astrological perspective, there are few substantial conclusions, which indicates that this work is the beginning of more to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blessed Virgin, November 1, 2004
This review is from: Visions of the Virgin Mary: An Astrological Analysis of Divine Intercession (Paperback)
I found this book only two days ago and I am already thankful to have done so. One reviewer wrote in about astrology being against the teaching of Jesus. Reader's take note, this is not a christian book. This is a Marian book, about Mary, for Mary. Many people see the Blessed Virgin as Goddess, not simply the mother of christ. This book will take you through the apparitions of Mary at Lourdes, Fatima, and many others. I feel that with this work, Llewyllyn Publications is finally printing things worth while instead of the same old dribble over and over again under a different title. If you are a follower of Mary and want to experience her in your life to the fullest then buy this book, while it won't be an end all do all say all complete guide to this Blessed Goddess it will assist you on your journey. Peace and Prayers be with you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Why are there so many sightings of Mary? This book has one possible answer, April 4, 2009

This review is from: Visions of the Virgin Mary: An Astrological Analysis of Divine Intercession (Paperback)
Marion apparitions have been a cultural phenomenon for hundreds of years. There have been many scholarly studies of these phenomena - which look at socio-political context of the sightings, potential economic reasons for the sightings, possible psychological reasons for the sightings, etc. (A good academic analysis is Encountering Mary).

This book asks whether astrology and celestial events may be a reason for the sightings. Even though I don't agree with all of the analysis here, I personally find these various explanations interesting. And, since I know very little about astrology, this book was a good opportunity to learn a little about both phenomena (the visions of Mary, and astrology).

There are many studies which demonstrate we are strongly affected by the moon, the stars, the tides, the seasons... so to me, this is a fair question. Are we more open to spiritual experience during certain times of the calendar, or during certain celestial events? Are these "hallucinations" coincide with the celestial calendar? Or, is it possible (as the author concludes) that events are happening in the stars themselves to cause these mass sightings.

If you are an open minded person with a sincere interest in these subjects, then I suspect you will enjoy this work.
