Book Description

In this brilliant picture book for readers of all ages, acclaimed illustrator and humorist Jean-Philippe Delhomme imagines a parallel alien world where things aren't quite as they seem. Providing a tour of this odd planet is a precocious kid from Earth who is on a family vacation. Readers will delight in learning about bizarre alien creatures, who are green all over with enormous circular snouts the size of dinner plates. They drink green minty milk, and get their chewing gum from bushes but their world is also full of computers, fast cars, and skyscrapers. In the end, our narrator discovers that these aliens actually have a lot in common with humans.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 2-4-"We usually go to Connecticut. But this year, we are taking our family vacation on another planet." Readers then follow this Earth family's atypical vacation-seeing sites, eating green hot dogs, and picking wild chewing gum from bushes. Delhomme takes great pains to emphasize the differences and similarities between the two worlds but at times goes overboard in doing so, resulting in a flat, somewhat repetitious text. His distinctive paintings feature elongated figures, both human and alien. Vibrant, bold greens, reds, golds, and blues dominate this otherworld. Children may enjoy the idea of vacationing on another planet, but there's not enough here to sustain interest or warrant purchase.-Meghan R. Malone, Turner Free Library, Randolph, MA
