Book Description

September 2003
Over 40 malt whisky distilleries (and other related facilities) in Scotland and Northern Ireland are detailed in this visitors' guide. Arranged on a regional basis, centred around an appropriate touring base, the book looks at each facility in detail for the whisky enthusiast. Preliminary chapters deal with the manufacture of Scotch (and Irish) malt whisk(e)y, with an explanation of how the guide works and how it should be used, and a brief history of distilling in Scotland. The second part is an A-Z of all the relevant distilleries, cooperages and heritage centres. These are detailed comprehensively and are given a seven-still rating for overall performance. The guide covers aspects such as ambience, appearance, ease of access for caravans/campers, AV quality, range of goods for sale, tour content and quality, and standard of catering, toilets and disabled access. The following distilleries are covered: Aberfeldy, Aberlour, Ardbeg, Isle of Arran, Ben Nevis, Benromach, Blair Athol, Bowmore, Bunnahabhain, Bruichladdich, Old Bushmills, Caol Ila, Cardhu, Clynelish, Cragganmore, Dalmore, Dalwhinnie, Edradour, Fettercairn, Glenfarclas, Glenfiddich, Glengoyne, Glen Grant, Glenknichie, The Glenlivet, Glenmorangie, Glen Moray, Glen Ord, Glenturret, Highland Park, Isle of Jura, Lagavulin, Laphroaig, the Macallan, Oban, Pulteney, Royal Lochnagar, Strathisla, Talisker, Tobermory, Tomatin and Springbank. The Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre and Speyside Cooperage are also covered.

I bought the book to help me choose how to make the best of my limited time visiting Speyside. How do you choose between visiting Macallan, Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Glen Grant, Aberlour, etc.? Well this book breaks down each experience in detail giving descriptions on everything from the tour format, to the friendliness and helpfulness of staff, to tasting notes for the included samples. Even the cleanliness of the washrooms and the breadth of items available in the gift shop are covered. Where can you bottle and label your own bottle for a one-of-a-kind souvenir? What's the prettiest distillery? Is the tour better directed to the novice or the connoisseur? How much does it cost? What makes the distillery unique? Where is the malting, bottling, coopering done? Where does the water come from? What parts of the process are we allowed to see on the tour? All is covered. My only complaint is the apparant absence of a recommended amount of time to allocate for a visit to each distillery. A couple of hours seemed like plenty for most, but some are much quicker and some make you want to stay and enjoy the grounds (or the tasting room) for hours...
