4.0 out of 5 stars Acoustic Folk Death Metal?
Likely nobody expected what they got when they first encountered Finntroll, and you shouldn't be expecting what you get with this cd either (their third release). This is a 100% acoustic cd from what you might normally call a death metal band (has any other 'death metal' band done such a thing?).

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting stuff, but not remotely metal
I've only recently discovered Finntroll and their crazy Finnish humppa metal sound, but I enjoyed their 2007 album Ur Jordens Djup enough to look into their earlier works. The first one I picked up was 2003's Visor Om Slutet. It may also be the last one I try. Apparently Finntroll's sound has evolved significantly over the past few years, because instead of the crazy...

Likely nobody expected what they got when they first encountered Finntroll, and you shouldn't be expecting what you get with this cd either (their third release). This is a 100% acoustic cd from what you might normally call a death metal band (has any other 'death metal' band done such a thing?).

Of course, if you're familiar with Finntroll, you'll realize that this is less of a stretch than with most metal acts, since they employ elements of humpa polka, folk music, Sammi joik vocals, and other odd folk bits into their normal metal assault. Still, it's not as if they're playing it safe here... many metal fans probably won't be interested in a strictly accoustic cd, but they aren't likely to attract a lot of folk music fans with their grunting "Trollish Hoedown" music. But if you like Finntroll as much as I do, you can easily envision this as being the sound of the trolls in a more mellow mood.

You get some nice accoustic tunes, some trollish grunting polka, more sammi-joik vocals, and just generally things that nobody was expecting. It's not as weirdly ear-popping as the folk death polka metal whatever-you-call-it that you normally get from them, but it's definitely weird.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soundtrack to Ingmar Bergman & Jim Henson's lost masterpiece, July 14, 2003
This review is from: Visor Om Slutet (Audio CD)
Not really quite sure what to say about this except that it's absolutely delightful-it's pretty critic-proof. If you ever find yourself walking home from a party through the woods completely messed up, this would be the thing to have in the discman. By turns sounding like Emmet Otter's Jugband and Mortiis, it offers a really delightful mix of dark soundscape and truly weird acoustic hoedown-almost as if it were the soundtrack to a documentary about the lives of trolls, with ethnographic samples of their folk music. Either that or it's the soundtrack to the lost collaboration between Ingmar Bergman and Jim Henson.

Either way, it's a truly creepy, but wondrous experience. My copy came with a patch and a sticker. A warning if this is your first exposure to this band: I am told their other material is much more metal and much more ...polka... than this release. But I bet it's a blast.

I especially enjoy the trolls eating on track 8. GREAT STUFF!

5.0 out of 5 stars really creepy..., July 1, 2003

This is an excellent CD. Finntroll has moved on from death metal to more atmospheric stuff --- it's like those relaxation cds with nature sounds, only instead of being soothing it just freaks you out, like if it was recorded in woods, at night, and there were trolls about. It's awesome! Many different instruments are used in addition to the typical guitars, base, synthesizer and drums; including recorder, tin flute, kazoo, mouth harp, iron horn, bullroarer, minced meat, saw, triangle, pieces of steel, egg shakers, tambourine, bodhran, wooden djembe, iron djembe, beer crates, floor, handclaps, and sticks. Very unique sound. It is not metal, and doesn't sound much like their last CD, Jaktens Tid. However, it is a great CD, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to try something completely different from anything else out there. Come to think of it, this would be hilarious to start playing at night on a camping trip without telling anyone, when you're out in the middle of nowhere...

5.0 out of 5 stars Finntroll does it again, July 28, 2005
This review is from: Visor Om Slutet (Audio CD)
before i got this, i had already purchased jakten's tid, midnatten's widunder and nattfodd, i loved them all, they are among my favorite albums of all time (jaktens tid my personal favorite). and now finally i purchased this one....

it truly is one of the weirdest albums ever, but also one of the greatest!! a mix of ambient and accoustic music (with a some celtic instruments thrown in) is truly a great recipe for a kick ass album, if you are a fan of accoustic/ambient music, or just finntroll music, i highly reccomend you picking this up!

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting stuff, but not remotely metal, August 7, 2009
This review is from: Visor Om Slutet (Audio CD)
I've only recently discovered Finntroll and their crazy Finnish humppa metal sound, but I enjoyed their 2007 album Ur Jordens Djup enough to look into their earlier works. The first one I picked up was 2003's Visor Om Slutet. It may also be the last one I try. Apparently Finntroll's sound has evolved significantly over the past few years, because instead of the crazy "polka metal" I was expecting, Visor Om Slutet doesn't remotely qualify as a metal album at all.

The music on Visor Om Slutet is largely acoustic folk music with clean and "troll" vocals. It relies heavily on flutes and accordions, and has a very ethnic feel. Now this is what made Finntroll appealing as a metal band, and to be sure, the music on this album is totally decent. It's just more appropriate to serve as a soundtrack for fantasy role playing games or a renaissance faire. But it doesn't rock at all. Not even a little.

If you're looking for some unusual folk music, by all means give Visor Om Slutet a listen. If, however, you're looking for metal in the same vein as Finntroll's later releases, you're going to be disappointed by this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Epitome ov Trollish!!!, December 23, 2008
This review is from: Visor Om Slutet (Audio CD)
Ok here's the deal, Visor Om Slutet WAS recorded in a cabin in the woods outside ov Helsinki. Troll horn recorded and produced it himself inside the cabin.

From beginning to end this album brings you back to another time and place with the real sounds ov the forests and its inhabitants. This is a Trolls album. So if you think your a Troll like a do then please pick this up.

It's a stoners album, very very down tempoed. I keep this album in my home stereo the entire time. It's what I put on when i'm high or shroomin'. yes those ov you that know what I mean, take an 8th and listen to this album. but skip Rov which is track 8. gave me a bad trip hahaha

all in all this is hands down my favorite Finntroll album other than Jaktens Tid.

Stay Trollish

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Set, December 20, 2006

This is great music and a twist for the Trolls. It is folky yet heavy and I like every song. My only problem with this was that it is too short! I could have really got into a full CD while this is more like an EP. But all that aside, it will be on my play list for quite a while. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'm so torn on this issue, January 28, 2006
This review is from: Visor Om Slutet (Audio CD)
The bad thing about this cd is that it's too short, a little over half an hour and there aren't that many songs. There are only 4 songs with lyrics and some other tracks with instruments but there are too many tracks with noises or using the keyboard. That wouldn't have been a problem if they had more songs or just instrumentals using various instruments, naturally. The good thing is the the few songs that they do have are good and they make you want to get up and do a silly folk dance. The lyrics aren't growled out like they usually are on their other cd's. While listening to this cd you'll get the feeling that you're in the forest because of the occasional animal sounds.

Overall this is a good cd it just needed more songs. So if you want to listen to a somewhatly cooled down finntroll then get this cd. If you can try to buy this somewhere else because 30 bucks is way too much for any cd.
