Great book, covers areas that are left out of other books,

This review is from: Visual C++ 5.0: Developer's Guide (Sams Developer's Guides) (Paperback)
I just bought Visual C++ compiler. I have never used it before but I knew what I wanted to do with it. I wanted to write a small program to dial my modem using TAPI (Telephone Aplication Interface). This is the only book that I could find that had any mention of TAPI. Also, when I had a problem because I need to link with tapi32.dll this is the one book that explained how to link to dll's. I saw other books in the book store and they were inadequate at covering such a basic topic. I agree that there should be more examples. I want examples that I can compile, link and execute and then start modifying (like the "Java Examples in a Nutshell" book). This is a great book though.

Excellent book for intermediate level programmers,

I program in several languages already - most things that you want to do aren't documented well in the help files - things like opening sockets, ActiveX, database programming. This books does a fairly good job of explaining much of what isn't easily discovered from other sources. This was a real "gap-filler" for me. Great job guys. The only drawback is there's not quite enough material on each topic. There could have been more advanced discussions of each of the topics this book covers (of course, the book would have been three times as big - at which point shipping would cost more than the book).

Definately not for the beginning MFC-programmer,

Hoping to se the MFC classes in use I picked this book up. Though this book has a lot of great information about different areas of Windows programming its examples are sparse. This would not have been a problem if the book came with a CD containg all source code but it doesn't. You have to download a 3MB file from Sams Publishing and it does not even contain source code from all the chapters and especially not the most exiting ones. A lot of this general information you can find in other books like Dan Appelmans "Win32 API" books and even with the online documentation. What I want are examples!!!!
Very dissapointing - But it will probably be a valuable book in about 5 - 6 months when other books has showed me HOW to use this information!
