It appears to be written for a non-current version of VB Express 2005. Much of the code will not work with the version that you download today from Microsoft. (It might work with the version on the CD, but who wants to be stuck with an old program?) Some of the programs from the CD will give you "build errors" if you try to run them,

This is a common...

'Visual Basic 2005 Express: Now Playing' is a wonderful starter book for anyone that is new to Visual Basic and wants to quickly get their feet wet and start rapidly developing applications which can do more than you might have ever expected! Written in a nice, easy to follow style by Wallace Wang, this text has the typical No Starch design which is not only easy on the eyes but the brain as well. Logically separated out into 30 chapters (this might sound like a lot but I assure you it's not overpowering), this book assumes that you have little to no programming experience, and it won't have you running in the other direction like some other 1,000 page books might, covered front to back in terms and words that are truly overkill.

If you are new to programming with Visual Basic or want to learn about some of the new features that are part of the 2005 API, pick up this text and you'll be programming in no time!!

***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Starter Book, June 19, 2006
This review is from: Visual Basic 2005 Express: Now Playing (Book and CD edition) (Paperback)
If you are a complete newcomer to programming, you should seriously consider getting a copy of this book. It never loses sight of the fact that beginners don't always "get it" first time, every time and it uses non-technical explanations and good learning reinforcement techniques to show you the skills in the easiest, least complicated way possible.

The author Wallace Wang sets out his view in this way: "This book is dedicated to everyone who didn't
have the "right" education, test scores or job skills, but wound up succeeding at their chosen goal anyway. If you want to learn or do anything in your life, such as learn to program a computer, go ahead and do it and don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise."

This is a clearly written, well structured book that will be very useful to you if you are a newcomer to programming in general or to Visual Basic in particular. It won't be your last book on the subject, but it is an excellent starter manual and will certainly take you a fair way down the road .

Each chapter in this book contains enough detail to cover the important basics of a topic, but without overwhelming you with too much information.

Knuckle down for a few days with this book, read the detailed and understandable explanations, try out the code samples in the book and on the CD, run the Flash movies for additional help. Do that conscientiously and you will come out the other end with a good grasp of the fundamentals of VB2005 on which you can build further.

This is a common problems with publishers trying to have the first available book for a program. But they usually work off of a beta, not the finished product. In this case, it's a real pain for the unwary student.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even though it's on VB, it's still great, August 7, 2006
This review is from: Visual Basic 2005 Express: Now Playing (Book and CD edition) (Paperback)
Ok, perhaps my title was a bit flippant but this is a really killer book. It's more of a mid level or beginners book but even seasoned developers will find it a good refresher and there's a lot of good stuff in it.

The strenght of the book is the writing - he does as excellent job discussing everything clearly and concisely. Definitely a book that makes you want to keep reading it.

Overall, even though I'm not a big VB.NET guy (I bought it as a reference for those VB.NET projects i get occassionally) I loved it. I'd gladly buy anything else this author wrote.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners/Good for Intermediate & Advanced, January 3, 2007

This review is from: Visual Basic 2005 Express: Now Playing (Book and CD edition) (Paperback)
A well-organized and step-by-step guide for new VB2005 Express users is hard to find and this one filled the bill. This would be a good book for anyone teaching an introductory VB2005 Express course, especially in middle or high school, because each lesson is a self-contained, stand-alone lesson. Exercises do not build on previous exercises, and the video clips can be used independently -- an absolute god-send for classroom teaching.
I used this book to teach myself the basic skills while taking a so-called "introductory" VB2005 Express course that skipped over all the built-in tools and jumped right into the programming.
Altho' I found the stand-alone exercises a little repetitious because I moved continuously through the book, I quickly learned to retain my previous work and simply build on them, thus accellerating my pace. The more advanced chapters were extremely helpful too.
Overall, I found this book to be just what I needed as a new user of VB2005 Express. Thanks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Little else is needed to learn the program, June 17, 2006
This review is from: Visual Basic 2005 Express: Now Playing (Book and CD edition) (Paperback)
VISUAL BASIC 2005 EXPRESS isn't just for advanced programmers: it's designed to make Windows programming easy for both novices and software developers, providing a primer on general principles behind programming and explaining how to use the Visual Basic Express program. All the basics are presented in a fine package which includes code examples to use and modify and movies that demonstrate the tasks, plus a full version of MS Visual Basic 2005 Express. Little else is needed to learn the program!

I'm just starting out learning Visaul Basic. I found this book was very helpful. Written in simple and easy to follow English. If you are new to learning VB 2005 then this is a good start. Wallace also uses his own unique sense of humour in the book which makes it even more enjoyable to read.

Visual Basic 2005 Express: Now Playing (Book and CD edition)I have been learning visual basic now for 1-1/2 years spent alot of money on expensive books that are written for people who have probably 5 years experience. I highly recommend this book for beginneers the author makes it very easy to understand codeing, i learnn't more in the first 30 pages than i did with $150.00 worth of the other books.
Great Book and thanks
