Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Visual BASIC made Windows programming accessible to the masses--but only in version 5 does it finally offer the crucial ability to build components and controls that could be used to help build other applications. ActiveX Visual BASIC 5 Control Creation Edition explains how you can use Microsoft's free version of Visual BASIC to build ActiveX components that you can embed into other applications or onto your Web pages. Beginning with a rapid overview of the development environment and BASIC syntax, the book eventually delves into the specifics of object-oriented programming in VB5. Gary Cornell and Dave Jezak offer plenty of examples and useful tips, including solutions for common programming tasks.

From the Back Cover

All you need to build powerful, sophisticated ActiveX controls right now!
Get a head start on programming with Visual Basic 5.
Right now, no Microsoft technology is more important than ActiveX, the successor to OLE. ActiveX is Microsoft's key building block for the Internet, Intranets and the Active Platform. And with the Visual Basic 5 Control Creation Edition, Microsoft has delivered everything you need to create powerful ActiveX controls—all for free. Everything, that is, except documentation.
That's where this book comes in. Written by a member of Microsoft's Visual Basic development team and an award-winning VB expert, it tells you everything Microsoft hasn't. This book not only lets any experienced programmer create full blown ActiveX controls. It lets users of previous versions master many of the new technologies that will be used in the forthcoming full version of Visual Basic 5. You will start by learning the fundamentals of programming with the VB5 Control Creation (CCE), including VB5's increasingly sophisticated object-oriented techniques. Walk through every element of the CCE development environment, including its new intelligent code editor, forms engine and interactive debugger. Take full advantage of the Control Interface Wizard to streamline ActiveX control development. And discover:

*Techniques for adapting existing controls to your own needs.

*Powerful templates you can use to build your own controls.

*VB5 property pages, which make it easy to set control properties.

*Proven methods for testing, debugging and deploying ActiveX controls.

Then, step-by-step, create ActiveX controls that deliver powerful capabilities—with just a fraction of the work that would have been needed in C++. Build controls that:

*Deliver all of Visual Basic's powerful financial functions to the Web.

*Provide a full-fledged universal calendar for your users.

*Create more sophisticated labels, text boxes and option button groups.

You even get the complete Visual Basic 5 Control Creation Edition on CD-ROM—along with dozens of sample controls.
If you're an experienced programmer in any language, and you need to leverage the power of ActiveX controls now, this is the one book you must own.
The first book in Prentice Hall PTR's ActiveX Series.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't do it!, May 27, 1998

This review is from: Visual Basic 5 Control Creation Ed.: With CDROM (ActiveX) (Paperback)
Most of the book is about the VB IDE and a lot of the rest is about standard VB code. The sample controls are simplistic. You'd be better off using the online help and code samples that come with VB5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent writers!, May 26, 1998

This review is from: Visual Basic 5 Control Creation Ed.: With CDROM (ActiveX) (Paperback)
This book is highly recommended for beginning ActiveX control programmers. It's easy to read, easy for follow, and highlights the basic topics that every programmer must (or need to) master. The writers are simply excellent!

If you're a VB expert but have never created any ActiveX control before, you may still find this book useful (--albeit be ready to skip some of the chapters, especially those dealing with VB basics and the VB5 CCE IDE)
