Great book for the beginning VB6 DB programmer,
By Rod Gilbert (Austin, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Visual Basic 6 Database Programming for Dummies (Paperback)
This book was very helpful and informative. It clearly explains RDO, DAO, and ADO technologies. There are lots of good examples for everything, and I didn't find any errors in the code either. This book covered a lot of territory in just 350 pages. It can't teach you everything, but it does introduce you to the 'world of database programming in Visual Basic 6.' I would recommend this book to both the novice and experienced programmer. I have 7 years experience in everything from Mainframe to client/server, and I learned a lot. I am fairly new to VB, though.RGG

I got more than I expected!,
This review is from: Visual Basic 6 Database Programming for Dummies (Paperback)
I bought this book from a local vendor, not Amazon.com because I was in a hurry and needed a good reference right then. I was looking for something more advanced and because it was from the "For Dummies" series, I was afraid I was wasting my money. I already knew a lot of what was covered in the book but I was surprised at how much I didn't know! The examples are easy to follow and easy to reference. And the author covers a surprising amount of detail in such a short read. I would recommend this book to all beginners and intermediate level VB programmers.

It's a VB database programming appetizer,

I've been programming for several years. Did most of my work in MS Access, and Quick Basic before that. Access had spoiled me as far as writing small client/server programs. I was looking for something to introduce me into the world of Database Programming in VB. This book, surprisingly, does a pretty good job. I was looking for something to get me started with ADO as well as some of the newer VB technologies, such as WebClasses - a subject I knew nothing about. The book did a fairly good job. It doesn't go in depth into any of the subjects, but gives you enough to wet your appetite, which is what I hoped out of it. If you're looking for something to introduce you to the world of database programming using VB, this may be the one you want. Let's face it - compared to other programming books, you can't beat the price.

I got $... worth,
This review is from: Visual Basic 6 Database Programming for Dummies (Paperback)
First, I am only about a 1/3 of the way through the book, so things may get better or worse. I am not impressed with the lack of an examples CD. The sections you do code are so abbreviated, its hard to catch up. Furthermore, the example on Chapter 3 generates an error on my system and I have gone step-by-step a number of times thinking I missed something. The support page on the web is lacking and had the author/publisher bothered to better detail the examples, or include them on a CD, I wouldnt be having the problems I am. Where I -am- impressed is the way thd author writes. Clearly he knows VB Database Programming and is eager to show it. I just wish he'd be a bit more thorough in his examples. Its almost as though he wrote this guide in a hurry. I'm still working on finishing the book and the examples. So far, all I see here are glowing reviews and I wanted to share my experience. I found this book very useful on my VB projects for school but It could be better. So, if you are new to Database programming this is a good starting point.

The book is great for starting out in DB handling in VB6! It is a bit lacking in an in-depth coverage of relational databases

Dummies book makes you feel like one,

This review is from: Visual Basic 6 Database Programming for Dummies (Paperback)
There was a lot of theory, but not all that much instruction that could be applied outside this book's carefully designed examples. With the increasing popularity, I spend quite a bit of time flipping through it, trying to give it a chance. As a computer instructor, I wouldn't suggest it.
