This book is thin on facts, and heavy on fluff and weight!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: MCSD Visual Basic 6 Distributed Applications Study Guide (Exam 70-175) (Hardcover)
I found that this book was extra heavy in weight, but lacked much of what you need to pass the exam. I'd suggest getting the Exam Cram series for this test, unless you are new to VB 6. If you are new, I still wouldn't suggest this book, I'd suggest getting one of the VB 6 in 21 days books, and follow up with the Exam Cram material. You couldn't use this book to get certified, unless you used the weight of the book to knock an MCP on the head to take his certification. I passed both VB certs, but I found that this book was a waste. Good luck on your exams!

Review,
By ericdred@zebra.net (Birmingham, Alabama) - See all my reviews
This review is from: MCSD Visual Basic 6 Distributed Applications Study Guide (Exam 70-175) (Hardcover)
I read this book and passed my 70-175 exam. However, I did not depend on the book alone - I also made use of the Mastering Series CD covering enterprise developement. It also helped that I also have studied for and passed the 70-176 exam. There are numerous typos and errata to weed out though especially in the practice questions. Too much focus is given to the IDEs and program setup of the backoffice components. Perhaps that is required to get the MS seal of approval, but that kind of stuff is not covered in either of the exams I took. ADO is covered more thoroughly in the 70-176 exam preps but is also required on 70-175. Package-and-Deployment is not covered sufficiently either. The coverage of SNA and MSMQ was extraneous. Take 70-176 first or you will be taken off guard by the user services requirements of the exams because this book is not any help there.

Good Study Aid,

This review is from: MCSD Visual Basic 6 Distributed Applications Study Guide (Exam 70-175) (Hardcover)
I read Syngress' Desktop book as well, and like that one, the Distributed book worked for me. I have some knowledge of VB, and this book explained things well. I wouldn't recommend a terrible book to anyone, and I have recommended this one to many of my associates at work. Give it a try... I don't think you'll regret it.

Run Away, and Don't Look Back,
This review is from: MCSD Visual Basic 6 Distributed Applications Study Guide (Exam 70-175) (Hardcover)
If you want to get bogged down with information that will never show up on the exam, then this pretentiously thick book (aren't exam preps supposed to be condensed? ) is for you. Example? There are a lot of ADO questions on the exam, but this book spends most of its data discussion dealing with legacy systems, VSAM, ISAM, DB2... and they have the gall to quiz you on this material in the end-of-chapter exams. Distracting, error-prone, and too much paper. Just don't.

Provides the Info you need.,

This review is from: MCSD Visual Basic 6 Distributed Applications Study Guide (Exam 70-175) (Hardcover)
The information in this book helped me. It wasn't a 5 star, as it does have some errors. I gave it a 4 because it has quality information, and I loved the format with it's two minute drills, and exam watches. I gave it a 4, as well, because the errors I found in the book were posted on their errata site. The book isn't perfect, but it does the job for me.

Technically sound, easily understood. What more can you ask for? (Great Price- Thanks Amazon!!) This book follows exam objectives, is large enough to cover all important topics well, but not too large for you to lose interest and concentration. For the $, why wouldn't you use any reference you can? I reccommend this book, and hope if you take any of these critiques seriously, you take mine. Getting any certification is difficult, and we certainly need quality and accuracy. I've become convinced with this book that Syngress knows this, and does very well in making certain we get what we need.

I Wrote,
By A Customer
This review is from: MCSD Visual Basic 6 Distributed Applications Study Guide (Exam 70-175) (Hardcover)
As an MCSD, this book has an adequate supply of study materials. However, some of the other reviewers are, to say the least, a little strange. When you take a Microsoft Exam, one does not "write" the exam, they "take" an exam. Past tense is not "wrote", but "took". I am a little let down that people attempting to attain their MCSD would be studying to "write" the exams.

Outshines the Rest,
By A Customer
This review is from: MCSD Visual Basic 6 Distributed Applications Study Guide (Exam 70-175) (Hardcover)
It seems like every publisher on the planet is hacking together MCSD/MCSE titles now-a-days. Honestly, most of it is incomplete, mistake-ridden and filled with irrelevant tangents. This book on-the-other-hand is one of the best I've seen because it covers the VB6 exam goals thoroughly and accurately. Highly recommended.

Great reference for the exam!,

Even if all you do is VB programming, you may not pass the exam without a guide to Microsoft's specific exam objectives. This book covers every one of them - a good idea is to check them off as you go through the book once you've mastered them. Exam software good break from studying text.

A great, thorough review of exam material with practical information too. Make sure you know the interface well for the exam. Exam software with book was a really useful exercise.
