5.0 out of 5 stars Good source for advanced development, August 15, 1999
This review is from: Visual Basic 6 Unleashed (Paperback)
This book is an excellent choice for the experienced VB developer that is interested in true RAD development, and in utilizing some of the latest hot technologies.

This is an Intermediate-Advanced user level book. It is not an introduction to VB; as such it assumes the reader knows how to program in Visual Basic.

Not only does it introduce and describe how to utilize the rich features of the 6.0 development environment, it also introduces and describes how to incorporate hot technologies, such as TAPI, SAPI, MAPI, ADO, Socket programming, ActiveX servers and controls, Win API, DHTML, help systems, and more, into your VB projects using VB 6.0.

I found this book to be an invaluable addition to my collection, and refer to it often. The author was easily reached and happy to talk when I had an applications question.

5.0 out of 5 stars In a word - Comprehensive, January 12, 2000
This book goes into detail on about 98% of the important features of VB6, the only lacking parts in my opinion are the parts on Internet capabilities of the language, but that is an entire book itself. I am a professional VB programmer and it is always by my desk at home and at work.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is a very usefull book for the Intermediate to Advance., October 31, 1999
I have found that this book has help me in building applications very quickly using the new features in rad. However the user must first have some knowldge of VB. However it opens the new world of VB6. It also makes references to 3rd party componets. The book is very helpfull in understanding that VB can be usefull in buiding templates which can then be tailored to specific requirements. It goes over ADO, and data base programming, DBGRID, MTS, Internet ect.

4.0 out of 5 stars Class Modules, June 2, 2001
By
This is my favorite book on Visual Basic 6. The "Unleashed" series is great. This book contains a great deal of information not available elsewhere and is written in an accessable style and comes in a very nice hardcover edition, most appreciated on these tombs. My criticism is the coverage of class modules which are a central element of VB. For example, take the topic of class instancing. This is a core concept in VB, as we all know. Yet its not discussed that I can find or referenced in the index. Chapter 11 covers "Creating and Using Class Modules" but it's an abstract discussion of planning. This is a significant oversight in a book that is held out as a "reference" work.

1.0 out of 5 stars OK Book, Misleading Title, February 5, 1999
This review is from: Visual Basic 6 Unleashed (Paperback)
When I read the title, "Visual Basic 6 Unleashed", and read the back of the book, "you'll obtain the skills, understanding, and breadth of knowledge to unleash the full potential of VB6." I was under the impression that this book would cover ALL (or at least most) of VB6. Instead it is a book which aids in making the transition from VB5 to VB6. Vital information is also missing. How can a book be titled VB6 Unleashed, without any info on WebClasses and IIS Applications? A technology new to VB6. I feel this book was pushed onto the bookstore shelves early (it was one of the first) and suffers because of it. I feel "tricked" into buying a book I didn't need. The title and summary on the back should more accurately reflect the contents of the book. If you need such a book, then this one is at least average.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Information - Poor Source Code, December 16, 1999
By A Customer
I found the information in this intermediate level book to be on par with the others in the "Unleashed" series (No, they are not intended for pure beginners). It was easy to follow and presented its subject matter in a clear way.

However, there is one monumental problem with this book. The printed example source code is full of typographical errors. They are correct on the CD though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally - a Book that offers help on "HELP", May 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Visual Basic 6 Unleashed (Paperback)
This is most certainly NOT a beginner's book, but certainly worth the price as a desk top reference for the VB developer. This was the only book I found that offers step by step instructions on how to create and display an on-line Help System.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book covering the new features available in VB 6., October 31, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Visual Basic 6 Unleashed (Paperback)
This book is not aimed at beginners to Visual Basic. It is aimed at those who are already familiar with Visual Basic 5, and want to find out what's new in VB 6. A useful read.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Intermediate-Advanced should be changed to beginning, October 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Visual Basic 6 Unleashed (Paperback)
I found this book almost useless. The first chapters on the new features of VB 6 were helpful, but after that it is a beginning VB programming book. If you are looking for a reference guide, look elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of helpful content., May 6, 2002
In this VB book, you can find whatever you want/need to find. Rob Thayer shows some of his techniques, which ARE sometimes quite helpfull. Basically this book has a lot of content for different sides of Visual Basic programming. Definately for a bit advanced VB 'users'. I give this book 5 because it helped me more than once with little problems like 'MAPI' etc. Really recommend it to any one who is into Visual Basic programming and want to become a skillfull programmer of it.
