Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Multimedia is a huge, diverse field, so it's not surprising that Visual Basic 5 Web and Multimedia Adventure Set should present a huge, diverse, and, at times, sprawling collection of programming techniques for building multimedia applications. Topics covered include hypertext and hypermedia applications, palettes and colors, sprite animation techniques, complex audio manipulation, MIDI, Web-based ActiveX, and the use of the Media Control Interface. The authors also explore the use of many Windows graphics and multimedia application programming interfaces (APIs) and uncover some of the low-level details of relevant Windows media objects, including sounds and color palettes. A large-scale sample Visual Basic application called Explore the Grand Canyon (included with other examples on the bundled CD-ROM) gives you an opportunity to build a custom hypermedia engine and put many other techniques from the book into practice.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some good info, but heavily flawed listings, August 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Visual Basic 5 Web & Multimedia Adventure Set: The Best Way to Develop Interactive Multimedia with Visual Basic 5 (Paperback)
This book provides information that is hard to find elsewhere, and consolidates it all into one volume. While you can learn a lot about waveform editing and sound manipulation, the code listings are hard to follow. The authors seem to reproduce the code in each step, but you'll notice that the code is different sometimes, leading to much confusion and the generation of errors. This is a good source of information for those who need Win32 multimedia info, but it is poorly presented.

3.0 out of 5 stars Did not work properly on Windows NT 4.0, July 2, 1998
This review is from: Visual Basic 5 Web & Multimedia Adventure Set: The Best Way to Develop Interactive Multimedia with Visual Basic 5 (Paperback)
Although the book states that it is written for Windows 95 and NT, the audio portions on some of the tutorials caused my NT 4.0 station to crash. As the tutorials build upon one another, this is a major flaw for NT users.
