3.0 out of 5 stars Well done, if you can watch it.
I watched the VHS version when it first came out and enjoyed it. When the price of the DVDs came down I decided to buy it. However, I've not been able to get the DVD to play on my computer DVD-ROM or any computer's DVD-ROM for that matter. Anyone had this same problem? The DVDs are useless to me now since I don't have and don't want a TV but I can't get the Marketplace...

This review is from: The Visual Bible's Matthew - DVD (DVD)
The Visual Bible's Matthew is a wonderful resource, well-made and entertaining as well as informative and inspiriational. The high price-tag may discourage some viewers, but fear not. There are two lines of videos (on VHS) which use footage from Matthew and The Visual Bible's Acts. One line is the Visual Bible For Kids. This series frames the awesome footage from The Visual Bible using stories set in the present to draw kids in and help them understand what they are seeing. Also, there is a line of videos called The Topical Bible Series which uses footage to explore such topics as The Passion and Healing. These videos are hosted by popular contemporary Christians artists. If your family or church can afford Matthew in its entirety however, it is well worth your money, especially on DVD. The DVD extras include the ability to listen to the soundtrack music of the film, biographies of the biblical characters in the film, searches by Chapter and Event (Jesus' birth, baptism etc.), a Spanish as well as English soundtrack (so you get Mateo and Matthew for the price of one) and English subtitles for the hearing impaired. This is video should be seen as the standard for all future multimedia presentations of the Bible. Also available is an audio book which features the music and dialogue from the film....

5.0 out of 5 stars THE MAN WHO MADE JESUS SMILE, January 29, 2000
This review is from: The Visual Bible's Matthew - DVD (DVD)
The Visual Bible's Matthew is more than a movie. Bruce has given Jesus flesh and blood and allows us to experience Him as never before. In other films Jesus comes across as serenely detached from those around Him. In Matthew , He embraces His disciples ,those whom He heals with a deep burning love evident from the smile on His face .

Matthew is also unique from other prodeuctions in that it is not a story about the Bible but is the word of God itself taken word for word from the NIV version of the Bible. This is the best film made on the life of Christ and Bruce is the definitive Jesus. He's a friend and I told him that when I pray or read the Scriptures it's his face, his portrayal that come alive. A must for all video libraries .Dynamic video and audio on DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Visual Bible Matthew, November 30, 1999
This review is from: The Visual Bible's Matthew - DVD (DVD)
This is an extraordinary movie of the life of Jesus based entirely on the Gospel of Matthew. It was the best depiction of Jesus I have ever seen, well done and quite inspirational.

Unfortunatly, it is quite expensive and is priced so that most people will have to wait until their church obtains a copy.

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Accurate, first rate! Must-see for new & mature Christians!, February 1, 2001

After several years of pain-staking search for the accurate and non-deviating portrayal of the Bible, the Visual Bible people finally made one that is definitely worth owning! Such fabulous attention to detail, and accuracy in the relaying of The Word, you will be moved forever! If you are into glitz, glamour, and embellishment of the Truth, you will not like this, then again, you won't like the Bible either! What Christ has done for us and why He came is spelled out in Matthew through the inspired writing of Matthew. For some, reading Scripture is confusing or difficult. To have several senses taking in The Word makes it stick with you and be moved by the Holy Spirit, as The Word should! You will fall in love with Christ as you are supposed to as one of His lambs. I have recommended this series to several friends and others who have been struggling to know Christ, and they have all said the same thing about how this has touched them. Our church uses The Visual Bible Matthew in addition to our regular Bible studies. Even children are able to remember passages and their context (which most people LOVE to take out and twist to suit their own needs when they do not understand not WANT to understand scripture as it is written) which will help them throught their lives to enable them to separate the "wheat from the chaff". As a devoted Christian and mom of three children, I highly recommend The Visual Bible Matthew in any format you can get! It is the best investment you can make for you, your family and anyone you share this with in the walk with Christ.

5.0 out of 5 stars Many Biblical Bible Series Matthew given as gifts..., January 4, 2004
This review is from: The Visual Bible's Matthew - DVD (DVD)
Of all the movies I've seen about the life of Christ, including the recently released "Gospel according to John" by the same company, this one stands out the most in my mind. This portrail of Jesus is one of a living man, not a stiff person who merely died on a tree. It helped me tremendously in my understanding of the Bible, so much so, I have bought the DVDs when they're on sale here to give to friends.

The costumes and acting are very well done, and the actor who plays Jesus helps the viewer realize that his life was not only about the sacrifice for all, but about love. This is the New International Version word for word. Not one word is interjected into the script, and it's absolutely amazing that it could be acted out with such continuity. Even the "begats" (the lineage part most of us skim over) had some memorable moments.

I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to know more about the life of Christ, or who is tired of hearing that God is all about punishment and wrath. "What you have done for the least of these you have done for me". "I tell you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you".

You might even get the impression He has a sense of humor.

I concur with the other reviewers that the other movies portray a Jesus that I in particular would not care to get to know. Even the "Jesus" movie by Campus Crusade that has been translated into hundreds of languages is just not much of a movie.

This one draws you in and it's too bad that *it* was not around before the aforementioned Jesus movie otherwise it may have gotten more exposure. I agree that it's pricey but I think Christians should start making better productions; sometimes that costs more especially when the viewer base is not that broad. The upcoming "Left Behind" has a $17 million budget which in Hollywood wouldn't buy you Tom Cruise let alone the rest of the movie.

We're going the right direction with this kind of quality production. I plan to order Bruce's "Footsteps of Jesus" which of the 31 reviewers ALL 31 have given 5 stars--never seen this on Amazon!

Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful portrayal of Jesus, October 21, 2000

First of all, the fact that the 'script' for this movie is the actual book of Matthew from the bible makes this movie completely and totally credible. It is no more than, and no less than the inspired word of God (the NIV version). This is wonderful in my opinion, because you don't have to watch the movie being critical of the interpretation, or of the words they use. You can just enjoy seeing such a joyful representation of Jesus! It seems that most movies portray a bland and not too exciting version of Jesus, but this definately lets you see him as I always saw him to be: joyful, compassionate, deeply caring, yet fun. A great movie!

5.0 out of 5 stars blessed, March 29, 2005
This review is from: The Visual Bible's Matthew - DVD (DVD)
This film was such a blessing to my wife and I, it is about time we see a film that depicts Christ as a joyous loving savior that is excited to be in the midst of his creation. You see him delighting in all things, especially in his people the Jews. We are finally given a glimpse of a Lord that has compassion on his people and is not afraid to be corny, to step out and touch the leper, it is like he is saying "BE HAPPY, IT IS OVER I HAVE FINALLY COME. I AM HERE. I AM IS HERE. THE GREAT I AM IS HERE. THE CURSE WILL BE BROKEN REJOICE, REJOICE!!!

So when you get to the scene that makes those that will believe - live (the crucifixion). It will rock you, because you see someone laying down there life, someone that truly does not deserve this payment. Christ the perfect sacrifice. It is a great film, and you can never go wrong when media is being spoken word for word, and this is word for word out of the book of Matthew.

This portrayal of Jesus is the most awesome I've ever seen; truly inspiring...he's got a sense of humor, a sweet personality, and he's totally adorable! The fact that some screenwriter didn't take creative license with the Word is wonderful; you can actually read your Bible alongside. The actor's gift of acting makes this film the beautiful work of art that it is. We've used it in Bible study and I hope this representation is the one my kids think of when they think of Jesus. It's worth the price tag!
