This is well produced book with lots of colour photos illustrating Joen's excellent colour sense. It is rather limited in scope, however. After the introductory chapters on the usual analyses of good design features (fairly brief), the rest of the book illustrates basically one point. That is, you can analyse all the range of colour and value in a source photo to produce a quilt that resonates with the same colours and balance of contrast. Some of the quilts are stunning, particularly one of a bull, using mainly browns. It was seeing that in the 'excerpt'on amazon, that made me buy the book.

Take the Stress out of Creating a Quilt,

Using Joen's Visual Coloring approach, selecting colors you love in nature and duplicating the effect in your work is easy and makes your quilt stand apart from all others. In this beautiful resource, Joen shows exactly how she uses photographs and pictures from magazines to select colors and fabrics for her quilts. She also tells how a photograph inspires a quilt. And walks you, step-by-step, through the process so you can do exactly the same thing. No trying to remember what a tone, shade or tint is - just see the colors you like in a color photograph or picture and create the mood in your quilt.

I give this book a high rating because the author presents a new way of apporaching color selections. This method does not require advanced degrees in art. It is very down to earth.

Review of Visual Coloring,

I enjoyed this book. It is visually very appealing. However, I have read every book Joen has ever written and I would say that there are a lot of beautiful pictures to back up a pretty simplistic notion: find fabrics in colors that match color schemes you think are beautiful. And I do think that the quilts created from those palettes were interesting but that they also showed an important corollary that was never explored... if you really love a color combination and want to translate that feeling to a quilt, use similiar proportions of the colors. So, while I do not think this was Joen's best work on the subject of design, it was excellent eye candy, and reading it was a very pleasant way to spend an evening.

This is one of the best quilting books I've read in a while. I actually borrowed it from the library at first, read it, and was so impressed that I decided to buy it. Joen Wolfrom's approach to color is simple and natural, her ideas are easy to follow, and the quilts in this book are inspiring. While I usually design my own quilts, some of these were so appealing that I will be duplicating them. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Worth more than $2.00,

I don't have anything to add regarding contents of this book except to say that it is worth far more than the $2.00 I paid for it! If I were a seller I would want at least $9.00 for it. So many of the quilts are incredibly beautiful and although the book doesn't contain instructions for making any quilts it would be easy to do so.

I have desperately been searching for a book that will help me use color in my quilts and this book was recommended by an acquaintance.I was disappointed in the author's approach and felt that the description here and elsewhere didn't fully explain the subject matter. In Visual Coloring, Wolfrom suggests finding inspiration in nature. There are examples of photographs and the quilts they inspired. The author points out how and why she did (or didn't use) specific colors in the photograph. My personal approach is the opposite - I fall in love with a fabric and want to find coordinating fabrics to make a quilt. I have trouble coordinating the fabrics. Visual Coloring didn't help my specific problem. I've seen some tutorials by Jinny Beyer and will probably buy her swatchbook and try her method. I know I'm not alone in being color-impaired so I was a little put off by Wolfrom saying how easy it would be to find the fabrics to match the colors in the photograph. I've spent entire days driving from fabric store to fabric store to match a fabric that I've run out of. The idea of taking a photo to the fabric store and matching multiple colors just didn't appeal to me.

You won't look at things the same after this book!,
This review is from: Visual Coloring: A Foolproof Approach to Color-Rich Quilts (Paperback)
This book is a must have for all quilters. You will not look at things the same way after looking thru this book.My copy arrived right before a road trip. My friend and I had both spent time reading and looking thru it before the trip and during the trip it was pulled out a couple times as well. Our observations of the scenery quickly were interpreted into quilt discussions! |
