Not only are the quilts (in full color!) truly spectacular, but Joen is also the best teacher of the principles of design and color I've found in the "craft" world. Thank you, Joen, for choosing to teach us this stuff! Too often, the design and color aspects are "assumed" by the author of quilting books.Absolutely the best book on quilting design there is. If you are looking for "how to" make the quilts, this is not the book. There are other books for that.

Wolfrom ranks highest in quilters' eyes,

I am an avid quilter and have over 80 books on quilting. Wolfrom's I refer to time and time again. The Magical Effects of Color and The Visual Dance are worthwhile additions to any quilter's library. 10+

An invitation to The Visual Dance.,

This review is from: Visual Dance: Creating Spectacular Quilts (Paperback)
The Visual Dance is the best book about how to quilt that I have read. The text is encouraging, clear and informative and there are many pictures of astonishingly fine quilts. Although it would be the book I would choose to own if I had to own but one quilt book, it is interesting, beautiful and different enough from most quilt books that it would be worth having however many quilt books it joined.

Joen Wolfrom and her friends are quilt designers and artists and if you want to be linked into the creative zone of quilting--you've got to take a look at the quilts in this book. There is a color photo of a quilt called "The Dream" in the Visual Dance that I recognized immediately. I'm a writer and the same image has been coming to me in a short story format. I bet there are musicians and potters and all kinds of folks out there that will tell you the same thing. I took a workshop in quilt design from Joen last March and it really encouraged me to put in all the design time before embarking on a quilt. Just thumbing through this book and gazing at the quilts is like a graduate class in fabric design. :)mary cox

Great pictures, great advice, poor format,
By Rebecca (Portland, OR) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Visual Dance: Creating Spectacular Quilts (Paperback)
I checked this book out from the library and I'm having a love-hate relationship with it. The lessons on color, scale, balance etc. are wonderful, and I'm learning a lot. And the full color pictures of the quilts are, as the title suggests, spectacular. But the format of the book is really bad. One paragraph will reference a quilt, but not give the page number, just the photo number. So I have to flip through the different sections to find it. Sometimes they'll reference two quilts that illustrate a particular lesson, but they are located in totally different parts of the book. There just doesn't seem to be any organization, and without page number references, it's been a pain having to flip back and forth between the quilts & the lessons.
Putting the quilts referenced in a particular lesson either on that page, or putting all the quilt pictures in the same section would have been a much better idea. I would not purchase this book. But if it were given to me, I'd probably cut out all the quilt picture sections, staple them together, and keep them seperate from the book so I could reference them.

This book has wrenched me from my doldrums. The book Color Play by Joen Wolfron made me think there was hope for me. This book 'Visual Dance by the same author, has given me detailed goals, It has exercises to get me going. It has started me thinking in a different direction. I was stuck in a maze of stimulating ideas and I didn't know which way to turn. Highly recommended

I had seen this book at a friend's, knew it was out of print, and was delighted to find it. It arrived quickly and in great condition, as described.
