If a picture is worth a thousand words, this book is much longer than its 64 pages. Each new topic ("Arachnids," "Amphibians", etc.) is introduced with a paragraph, after which graphics do the teachings. Characteristics are pointed out for the over one hundred vivid photographs (mostly of animal exteriors and skeletons) and over one hundred additional illustrations (mostly of internal anatomy and different species), truly making this a "visual dictionary".

The book covers the spectrum of animals from worms, leeches, and sea urchins to sharks, kangaroos, and apes - and a nice array in between. Readers of all ages can learn from this intriguing book, and kids are likely to come back to it again and again. The book is not geared toward children ages 4-8, however; there is plenty of vocabulary here that would stump even lay 50 year olds. Still, even little readers can enjoy and learn from all the colorful visuals.

The Visual Dictionary of Animals is sure to be a hit with kids interested in zoology. But don't take my word on it - just ask the lion on the front cover.

We had this book in our home as our five, now-grown kids were homeschooled. Its bright, clear, labelled photos are visually appealing. Since there is no text to read -- just labels -- it does not intimidate struggling readers, rather it attracts them and they find themselves reading the words. Kids not old enough to read enjoy the pictures; read to them or just identify animals -- with sounds, of course! We just gave our copy to a six-year old grandson about to enter first grade. We looked at the spider and he easily read "leg" while I read "spinneret." and defined it for him. We only had time right then for a moment of reading, but he went straight to his daddy and although he couldn't remember the word, he eagerly shared how a spider made his web!

His almost two-year-old sister also enjoyed the pictures. We did the animal noises bit :) The report from home was that the book got a lot of use on the long drive.

Older kids will find challenging vocabulary . Did you know "spinneret"?

I thought that this would have more information it is great for younger kids but not for someone where there older child wants to become a vet
