5.0 out of 5 stars More than meets the eye, December 8, 2005
This review is from: The Visual Dictionary of Animals (Hardcover)
If a picture is worth a thousand words, this book is much longer than its 64 pages. Each new topic ("Arachnids," "Amphibians", etc.) is introduced with a paragraph, after which graphics do the teachings. Characteristics are pointed out for the over one hundred vivid photographs (mostly of animal exteriors and skeletons) and over one hundred additional illustrations (mostly of internal anatomy and different species), truly making this a "visual dictionary".

The book covers the spectrum of animals from worms, leeches, and sea urchins to sharks, kangaroos, and apes - and a nice array in between. Readers of all ages can learn from this intriguing book, and kids are likely to come back to it again and again. The book is not geared toward children ages 4-8, however; there is plenty of vocabulary here that would stump even lay 50 year olds. Still, even little readers can enjoy and learn from all the colorful visuals.

The Visual Dictionary of Animals is sure to be a hit with kids interested in zoology. But don't take my word on it - just ask the lion on the front cover.
