Book Description

A Visual Guide to Stata Graphics details Stata's graphics capabilities in an easy-to-use format. Using step-by-step examples, the author demonstrates the most efficient methods to create even the most complicated graphs. Virtually every page contains full-color examples of Stata graphs, with most pages showing three graphs. Along with each graph is the command that produced it, a brief description, and the name of its associated files. These files can be downloaded from the Stata Web site.

The first chapter provides an excellent introduction to Stata graphics and presents tips for using the book effectively. Each available type of graph is discussed in its own chapter: twoway graphs, scatterplot matrix graphs, bar graphs, box plots, dot plots, and pie graphs. The book discusses the most commonly used options, followed by a chapter discussing options that are available to all graphs. The final chapter discusses options that change the style of graph elements, such as color, line pattern, and text size. The appendix gives an overview of several topics, such as statistical graph commands, saving and combining graphs, common mistakes, and schemes.

More About the Author

I have always enjoyed searching for effective ways to teach seemingly complicated ideas in a simple manner. This included tutoring statistics when I was in college and being a statistical consultant at UCLA after that. The process of tutoring and consulting gave me immediate feedback about what worked, and what did not work. As I write, I am constantly thinking of the students, researchers, colleagues, or faculty members who will be reading what I write. My challenge is to provide readers the answers they seek in a form they can use best.

My first book was A Visual Guide to Stata Graphics, followed by the second edition updated with new features. My long standing wish to write a nuts and bolts book on data management in Stata resuled in Data Management Using Stata, published in the Spring of 2010.

I am working on my third book to be published by Stata-Press, this one focusing on interpreting and visualizing regression models using Stata. This book is anticipated to be released in 2011.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for help making graphs using Stata, December 13, 2005
This review is from: A Visual Guide to Stata Graphics (Paperback)
Stata totally revamped it graphing capabilities with version 8. I appreciate the ability to control all aspects of making graphs, but it comes with a price -- I had no idea how to make graphs anymore. This book is a huge help for understanding the new graphing commands.

So throw away your Stata Graphics manual as it is virtually unreadable (I mean that in the nicest possible way). This is a book of examples -- hundreds of them -- to help you figure out how to make graphs in Stata 8.0 or higher. The book is very nicely done and after reading the book I have a much better grasp of how to make graphs. It includes sections on all different kinds of graphs and even explains how to streamline making nice graphs using schemes. Highly recommended. You can also download all the necessary data and schemes from Stata's website to replicate every graph in the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book on how to make graphs with Stata, but can be better..., August 14, 2006

This review is from: A Visual Guide to Stata Graphics (Paperback)
This is a good book on how to make graphs with Stata if you don't have the time to go through the Stata Graph Manual. It's also much easier to learn than the manual. There are some repetitions in the book - the same concept is illustrated a few times for different types of charts - it makes sense for a reference manual but if you read the book cover to cover, it's not of much use. It can be a better book if the author could include more materials on how to do serious programming on graphs, because still many types of charts can not be easily produced by Stata build-in commands.
