Editorial Reviews

Financed by Adolf Hitler, "the people's car" of the early 1930s is a study in small-car reliability, streamlined design and affordability at $400. The Visual History of Cars is a lavish tribute to the cars of our memories and the cars of our dreams. Includes an incredible array of footage from around the world. Approx. 25 minutes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Award winning documentary on Volkswagen, September 6, 2007
By
This review is from: The Visual History of Cars - Volkswagen [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I suspect just about every VW fan will enjoy this documentary.

It covers the full history of the company, including some rare footage. It pulls no punches in covering Hitler's role in the founding of VW in the 30's, and its controversial roll in funding the early German regime. It also includes some rare footage of the very first VW factories, and the first VWs to come off the assembly line, including some military hybrid vehicles.

But it's really a fascinating history. Even in the 50's and 60's, the VWs got better gas mileage than most of today's hybrids.

It is only updated through the 90's, and some of the newer footage they show is somewhat cheesy - as if it came directly from Volkswagen. But overall, I suggest it to any fan of automotive history, and I give it 4.5 stars.
