The examples confused me,
By Vetten "Vetten" (La Mesa, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Visual InterDev 6 for Dummies (Paperback)
I bought Visual Interdev 6 for Dummies because I wanted a quick tutorial aimed at someone with no previous exposure to Interdev. I was looking for something that would walk me through all aspects of the program in a way that was easy to understand. Unfortunately, this book didn't meet my expectations at all. The first few chapters gave an adequate overview of the layout of the various windows, menu bars, etc., but as soon as the book progressed into work samples I started feeling lost. The progression of the sections didn't seem to flow together in a logical way, and the practice scripts and projects were sometimes poorly explained. By the time I reached Chapter 10 or so I was feeling like a total imbecile for not understanding the examples. I finally gave up on it and bought Practical Visual InterDev 6 by Michael Amundsen, which has exactly what I wanted--clear, concise, step-by-step examples. I breezed through the whole book and now feel like an Interdev pro! And I wish I had never bought Visual Interdev for 6 for Dummies...it was a waste of my money and time.

Complete lack of substance,
By A Customer
This review is from: Visual InterDev 6 for Dummies (Paperback)
If this book is the best of the "Dummies" series, then I know to steer clear of these books. The book provides few examples where the user is walked through a project from start to finish. The author merely explains aspects of the project as he sees fit.

If you learn by doing, this book is not for you.,

This review is from: Visual InterDev 6 for Dummies (Paperback)
I like books that teach by working through a sample project. The best of these types of books will give you the basic aspects of programming to get you up and running. This book is bits and pieces of Visual Interdev, but just when you think you're off and running it stops short, which is my take on the whole book.

Great example project, introductory explanations and tips.,

This review is from: Visual InterDev 6 for Dummies (Paperback)
I liked this book for a number of reasons. First, it has a great sample Visual Interdev project to learn from. Second, the author gives the type of tips/recommendations not explained in documentation but needed in working in the real world. Finally, what is explained is explained well. My only criticism is that the book could have covered more topics and details, but then I don't think that is the nature of these "Dummy" books. Of all of the books on VI that I have purchased (or returned) I like this one the best and would recommend it highly.

Not very detailed-dummies series I guess,
This review is from: Visual InterDev 6 for Dummies (Paperback)
You have to have VID enterprise edition if you want to hop on database stuff. That is one thing. The other is that author does not give full and detailed explanations of his doings-global.asa file is not always created by itself but rather you have to go into ODBC to set it up!!! Other than that it has some BASIC intro to ASP. These Dummies books do not offer much for 30 bucks. They worth barely 20, that is why I order them through Amazon.

For beginners but still misses out on small things,

This review is from: Visual InterDev 6 for Dummies (Paperback)
As all dummies it is on a low level which is great for beginners like me who only have minor experience from Visual Basic and VBA. Although it is to MICROSOFT focused. I had to look long and hard elsewhere to come around the fact that I don't have Frontpage/interdev extensions on my server.

Take this book and another more-indepth advanced look at InterDev 6.0 and you have the perfect self-study tools in preparation for the Microsoft Exam. I highly recommend this as a new comers book. Easy read (2-3 days) to get you started...on the right foot!

Great Introduction to VI 6,
By A Customer
This review is from: Visual InterDev 6 for Dummies (Paperback)
Was a complete dummy to VI6. Someone else told me this was the software I needed, so I got it but didn't know what it was used for. While VI6 is a huge product, this book gets you up and going pretty quickly. In here are enough examples to get a good idea of what you can do. Billy Bobs Auction (an example site he builds) is nowhere near the scope of the projects I am about to undertake, but it did provide a good starting point for me. The book was easy to understand, and in most all cases, the book matched what he said the software was going to do.Only 3 stars because it is a beginners book... and I do need more in depth information now...

In the best tradition of the "Dummies" series,

THE book to buy for the new VI6 user. Not only covers the "basics" but the book continues with more advanced topics. If you are new, or just beginning ASP/VI6 development this book is for you. If you are an intermediate user, it's still worth the read.
