5.0 out of 5 stars Great for C++ to Java Programmer
I am a C++ programmer and wanted to learn to use Java efficently and learn it quickly. The other reviews complain that the book advertised for beginning programmers, my copy did not. The book description was 100% correct. If you have a good understanding of programming techniques and want to learn the syntax, and structure of Java using MS Visual J++ 6.0, buy this...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not very good
This book tout's itself as "Open This Book as a Novice and finish It as a Pro". This is a VERY incorrect self-assesment. As a novice, I found that the sample code in the book was just plain wrong. The book may be okay for someone with J++ experience but it certainly isn't written with the beginner in mind. Osborne did a disservice by giving this book the...

Osborne did a disservice by giving this book the title "from the Ground Up". It probably would have been better titled "starting from the middle".

4.0 out of 5 stars Not for the Beginner, October 12, 1999
This review is from: Visual J++ 6 from the Ground Up (Paperback)
This is NOT the book you need if your just beginning your journey into the world of programming. This book covers the basics quickly and moves on to advanced topics like the WFC and COM/DCOM. However if you are experienced in C++ get this book it will get you started very quickly into the world of Java

1.0 out of 5 stars One to miss, October 31, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Visual J++ 6 from the Ground Up (Paperback)
I bought this book having no previous Java knowledge or experience, and have to admit that I found it to be of a poor standard. Maso moves too quickly between topics, leaving some necessary information to be poorly documented, or left out completely. In order to fully comprehend some of Maso's explanations, I actually ended up having to buy another book.

The most annoying point that can be made regarding "Visual J++ From The Ground Up", however, is that many (if not even most) of the code listings are actually incorrect. Whilst the downloadable code seems to compile properly, the methods detailed in the book itself have many errors.

This book is one to miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars The absolute BEST Java book I have seen., July 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Visual J++ 6 from the Ground Up (Paperback)
If this book does one thing perfectly....It explains things VERY CLEARLY. It never glosses over important sub-issues and it is the first book I reach for when I am expolring a new part of Java. The author lays everything out clearly and concisely.

This book is chock full of everything you need for Java applications and Windows. By far the best book of its kind that I've read. Really tells you what you need to know! I don't think you will be disappointed! Wish I'd had it sooner!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best programming book I have ever read, March 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Visual J++ 6 from the Ground Up (Paperback)
Brian Maso went out of his way to give us a book without fluff. This book is purely no-nonsense J++. If you want to learn java/J++ the right way, without gaps in your understanding, get this book. This book has 800 pages and each one of those babies is packed with well layed out knowledge.

5.0 out of 5 stars a very good book for software professionals., March 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Visual J++ 6 from the Ground Up (Paperback)
The book states clear how to write Java programs in Visual J++ 6.0, extremely thorough overviews of UI and COM programming. The database programming chapter is a bit limited. It is far superior to other Visual J++ 6.0 books I have read. This book is very good for software professionals.

5.0 out of 5 stars J++ specific, gets you up to speed fast, February 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Visual J++ 6 from the Ground Up (Paperback)
A fantastic book that accomplishes its goals perfectly. Mainly for the pro developer interested in msds-specific tools for win32 development. Easy to skim, but the depth is there when you have problems. In two days I created a gui (using the drag-n-drop tools) that used multiple threads and called into a C++ ATL COM dll I'd prev. written.
