VMU is worth the cost, December 20, 1999

As most gamers know, the accessories made by the system manufacturers... in this case, Sega... is generally more reliable than the peripherals made by third-party manufacturers. Dreamcast VMUs are no different. I purchased a third-party memory unit... it didn't work... especially when trying to save files from larger games, like NBA 2K. I later found that this was a common complaint with that particular manufacturer. I turned it in for the Sega VMU. No problems since. Only setback... if you play games on the VMU itself (not hooked to the Dreamcast), the batteries run out FAST. However, if you use it strictly as a memory unit, it is better than sufficient.

Sega's VMU,a game system for a system, August 25, 1999

Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
Segas VMU (visual memory unit)is a memory card style extra for the sega Dreamcast. It features an 8-bit processor,LCD screen, onboard memory, and its own controller w/ buttons. This little device will be a necesity for dreamcast owners,as it opens up new doors for gaming stragedy and fun.The VMU plugs into one of the two ports in the dreamcast controller and can not only save games, but in certain software can load a small part of the game to be played on the VMU itself. In RPG's,this could mean upping your characters level or managing your items,in sports titles, making game plans, ect. The possibilities are endless. The unit can also be used while using the dreamcast, for a personal view window. In sports games, this could mean choosing a stragedy without your opponent seeing it,or in action games having you heads up display on the VMU,not cluttering up the main screen. The VMU has a lot of promise,it is used well in the first wave of games, lets just hope developers continue to use this inovative little trinket well, and i'm sure they will.Another highly recommended product for the dreamcast.

very good idea not revolutionary though, December 12, 1999

the VMU by sega is a great and very useful accessory, works great with sonic adventure where you can save a cuddley little creature in the VMU and take it places and play games and feed it(tamagotchi), power stone with a mini game you can save on it. i would've given it a 5star rating except for the fact that my battery has died and i've only had it for almost 3 months, now it only works when in the controller(i was under the impression that when it was in the controller and playing, it recharged it for when it was out of the controller....not true)i can't even find a replacement battery anywhere.
