As most gamers know, the accessories made by the system manufacturers... in this case, Sega... is generally more reliable than the peripherals made by third-party manufacturers. Dreamcast VMUs are no different. I purchased a third-party memory unit... it didn't work... especially when trying to save files from larger games, like NBA 2K. I later found that this was a common complaint with that particular manufacturer. I turned it in for the Sega VMU. No problems since. Only setback... if you play games on the VMU itself (not hooked to the Dreamcast), the batteries run out FAST. However, if you use it strictly as a memory unit, it is better than sufficient.

Segas VMU (visual memory unit)is a memory card style extra for the sega Dreamcast. It features an 8-bit processor,LCD screen, onboard memory, and its own controller w/ buttons. This little device will be a necesity for dreamcast owners,as it opens up new doors for gaming stragedy and fun.The VMU plugs into one of the two ports in the dreamcast controller and can not only save games, but in certain software can load a small part of the game to be played on the VMU itself. In RPG's,this could mean upping your characters level or managing your items,in sports titles, making game plans, ect. The possibilities are endless. The unit can also be used while using the dreamcast, for a personal view window. In sports games, this could mean choosing a stragedy without your opponent seeing it,or in action games having you heads up display on the VMU,not cluttering up the main screen. The VMU has a lot of promise,it is used well in the first wave of games, lets just hope developers continue to use this inovative little trinket well, and i'm sure they will.Another highly recommended product for the dreamcast.

the VMU by sega is a great and very useful accessory, works great with sonic adventure where you can save a cuddley little creature in the VMU and take it places and play games and feed it(tamagotchi), power stone with a mini game you can save on it. i would've given it a 5star rating except for the fact that my battery has died and i've only had it for almost 3 months, now it only works when in the controller(i was under the impression that when it was in the controller and playing, it recharged it for when it was out of the controller....not true)i can't even find a replacement battery anywhere.

The Sega Visual Memory Unit is not an ordinary memory card!,

The Sega Visual Memory Unit (VMU) is absolutely amazing! It has an LCD screen so you can actually interact with it. For instance, I can take care of my chao even when I'm away from my Dreamcast. It helps unlock things in certain games. Sega could have made a plain old memory card. Instead, they made something that is amazing! Thanks to the VMU, my chao is doing a lot better now. There's only one thing about it that I don't like. It's the batteries. They don't last very long. When I checked the manual, it said if it's under continuous use, it'll last seven days which is only a week which I was a little upset about. After not too long, it had died and I had no CR2032 batteries. My friend had rented the Dreamcast, so I was able to get a power boost from it. If it's out of power, and you're playing the Dreamcast, it'll give the VMU a power boost that'll last for a period of time. But not too long after, it ran out of power and I had to wait until I finally found them. Other then that minor problem. It's an amazing, high-tech memory card compared to the other plain old boring ones.

Greatest Memory Card? Ever!,

This little puppy is a great feature that only the Sega Dreamcast system has. The VMU, or Visual Memory Unit, is like a memory card times 10 million. It has an 8-bit processor, (Like the old Sega Master System or Regular Nintendo) it's own small 1"x1" LCD screen, 200 blocks of memory, and it's own mini-style controller. Anyone who plays games on Dreamcast will need one of these. Almost every game you will play on Dreamcast you will need to save your game position, info, or stats. Using it is simple, plug it into one of the 2 Dreamcast controller ports, then boot up your favorite game and start saving! But that's not all! You can not only save games, but you can also PLAY GAMES on the VMU, and link your VMU with other VMU to play 2-player style games! There is a huge variety of games you can play on it but I think one of the most useful ones is the RPG mini-games. You can save your RPG characters info to the VMU, and then build up its skill on the actual VMU itself, this way, when you play the game again, it will be stronger and better depending on how much you built it up. You can also use the VMU while playing a game, it will often reveal secrects and allow you to do other goodies that are only accessable with the VMU. The only real flaw is that it doesn't have enough space, so you might have to buy 2.... If your a REAL Dreamcast gamer, you need atleast one of these, if not more.

This little mini gameboy/memory card is great, but there are 2 flaws 1. lack of memory for games that take up many blocks. I don't have a solution that but I do have a place where you can get those hard to find batteries. I found it on the internet ... On the top left search for "CR2032" and there is your battery. Overall I gave it a 4 stars baecause of the battery problem. Otherwise no problems.

This card is a MUST HAVE! It is very cool because when you arent using it to save games in your Dreamcast, you can play minigames that you can load onto the card from some Dreamcast games. The batteries on mine didnt last long enough but the good part is that you dont need batteries to use it in the system... its self powered when its inserted into the system. The saved data stays on the memory card even after the batteris die.

I like the look of this VMU (like a mini gameboy) but I can't figure to save my game without overwrite the existing game (say...you can do this with Playstation Memory by saving in a different block) I ended up erased my friend's favorite car with mine.

This is the only worthy memory device available for Dreamcast. The LCD screen comes in handy for games such as NFL2K and Code Veronica, and is a neat distraction in games like NBA2K. The VMU comes with 200 blocks of memory which I'm iffy on. On one hand, this is great if you're saving 90% of Dreamcast games, but if you plan on saving games for any of Sega Sports' games, it needs its own VMU because it takes up over 190 blocks. The batteries don't last long, as they last 2 hours maximum, but the device still functions when plugged into the controller. The Dreamcast VMU is great overall, but only gets 4 stars due to the fact that the batteries fry so easily. The only memory pack worth buying for Dreamcast.

This VMU card is a must have for Sega Dreamcast. It really makes the system. You can save up to a powerfull 200 blocks! But if you have a big game like NFL 2K or NBA 2K which require 180 or +. I suggest that you have one VMU for each controller that you have. It makes it fun and intresting because you your play picking ect.
