Book Description

Visual Resources Series November 15, 1995

The first comprehensive directory of visual resources to be published in more than a decade, this ambitious guide reflects the enormous changes in the field and lists more than 500 visual collections in the areas of art, architecture, and design throughout the United States and Canada. Entries provide complete information, including name and title of an individual in charge; phone numbers, fax numbers, and electronic mail addresses; extent of research and borrowing privileges; hours; size of collection and staff; and visual formats collected. Collections are organized by state or province, city, and institution. Subject, institutional, and personnel indexes augment accessibility to the material. Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The visual resources covered here are collections of slides and photographs and their digital equivalents that document art, architecture, and design and that are primarily used for research and teaching. More than 520 collections responded to the compilers' questionnaires, and the resulting data have been organized alphabetically by state and city, followed by Canadian province and city. Entries begin with address, name and title of the person in charge, phone and fax numbers, and e-mail addresses. Items covered in the collection profile are date established, academic diploma/degree programs supported, staffing, hours, users and user privileges, services (sales, copy photography), size by type of material (slides, photographs, negatives, videotapes), subject concentrations, and annual circulation. In addition, respondents indicated classification system, type of automated cataloging system used, electronic-imaging projects, and subject access.

Four indexes are provided: institutional, personnel, type of collection (e.g., museum, art department, library), and subject. This thorough directory will facilitate networking among curators and librarians, contribute to the development of cataloging and indexing standards, serve vendors and those involved in the technical aspects of visual-resources production, and aid researchers in locating repositories of visual reproductions in very specific subject areas. The Visual Resources Directory is highly recommended for large public libraries and academic libraries serving art, art history, or architecture students.
