5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent !
A handy book of Tips and Tricks, just as the title says. Keep it on hand because you will use it alot. Every .NET developer should have this book. At slightly over 100 pages, it is concise and easy to navigate.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good enuf for starters
First things first.....keep this book near your development machine.
When I started reading this book, I honestly felt that this book was telling me what I already knew. Well, partly coz I learnt some cool stuff about the IDE when I joined my job. As I read further, I was impressed with what the IDE provided and generally we as programmers/developers tend to...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Productivity Enhancer, June 24, 2006
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Visual Studio .NET Tips and Tricks (Paperback)
This is a very useful book at a fair price. Your improved productivity will pay for this book 10 times over.

The book could be improved if the author made the following changes:
1) Do not print it on recycled pizza boxes. The paper quality is terrible and makes it hard to read because you cannot tell and H from an 11, etc.
2) Start each tip with a little set of icons that show which version of VS each tip applies to. I was frequently disappointed that at the end of a 2 page explanation the final sentence would say, "This feature is only available in C# for VS 2002." Obviously, for someone programming in VB.Net for VS 2005 it would have been really nice to know this BEFORE I read the 2 pages.

Other than that the book is great. It is a quick read and with a few short hours of easy reading you will be a much more productive programmer.

BTW, the "Hacks" book from O'Reilly contains about 80% of the tips that are in this book, nevertheless I am glad I bought both.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent to begin with VS.NET, March 13, 2006

This rather short book has a lot of insightful tips and tricks for VS.NET. Mostly it covers VS 2003 but a lot of tips is also applicable to VS 2005. The level of tips ranges from beginner to average, and I wish I had this book back when I started working with VS.NET. But even now after years of everyday experience with the product I still found a number of features I either didn't know about or didn't use their full potential.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite kind of book, January 9, 2005
This review is from: Visual Studio .NET Tips and Tricks (Paperback)
This book is a great value, and the author is a good writer. This is my favorite kind of book -- the kind that helps you to be much more productive within a few minutes of casual reading.

Most general-purpose .NET programming books only cover the bare essentials of what you need to know about Visual Studio .NET 2003/2005 in order to complete the programming task at hand.

This book picks up where those books leave off, and pays for itself within the first 5 minutes of reading due to resultant productivity gains within Visual Studio .NET 2003/2005.

For newcomers to Visual Studio .NET, this book is highly recommended. I even recommend it for experts of Visual Studio .NET -- even if you know most of the tips and tricks in this book, there will probably be some that you don't that will by themselves justify the cost of the book. Experts will also inevitably run into someone who is learning Visual Studio .NET, and this is an ideal book to have on hand to lend to such a person.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very helpful reference book, August 11, 2005
This review is from: Visual Studio .NET Tips and Tricks (Paperback)
IDE plays a big role in .NET programming. I have 4 years .NET experiences but still cannot remember all useful IDE features up front. Like how to deploy a ASP.NET web application using Visual Studio, how to switch between code view and design viewer(makes you look more professional in front of your boss). This book gives out quick and easy tips to dig out IDE usage for VS 2003 and 2005. This also help me work more efficiently. I would recommend it to be a must have desktop reference at office.

If you use Visual Studio this is a must have handbook. It covers tips and customization for the IDE. I have found myself more productive since I've adopted a couple of the techniques found in the text. Another plus is that it covers Visual Studio 2005! It is nice to have a single source (that is printed) to go to for improving my use of Visual Studio.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great reference for the IDE, January 22, 2005
This review is from: Visual Studio .NET Tips and Tricks (Paperback)
This book is crammed with fantastic tips. I spend alot of time in the IDE, still found a ton of new features I had no idea existed.

This book covers all aspects of using the IDE, and does so in a very organized and easy to navigate manner. It's on my desk now most of the time so I can get to it quickly. It travels very nicely too.

I would highly suggest this book to any .net developer that spends a significant amount of time in vs.net. It is a very good resource.

First things first.....keep this book near your development machine.
When I started reading this book, I honestly felt that this book was telling me what I already knew. Well, partly coz I learnt some cool stuff about the IDE when I joined my job. As I read further, I was impressed with what the IDE provided and generally we as programmers/developers tend to ignore...even to look at it. While this book states that it covers the VS.NET IDE's from 2002 all the way to 2005, one-third of the book covers 2005...And the remaining book tells that this is there is 2003 but is better in 2005. The sad part about the book is that since 2005 is not yet released, and the non-MSDN subscribers don't use the 2005 IDE, the user may want to hang on to this book till the IDE comes out.
Having read the "Debugging Windows applications with VS.NET - By John Robbins" at school, I feel that the "debugging section" in this book is for novices.

And to answer the good-ol' question of would I buy this book....I would say "maybe - depending on my current expertise with the VS.NET 2003 IDE" ....but for someone who want to improve his/her productivity with the IDE...this book is worth its salt.
