Editorial Reviews

Review

“Helps teachers think about what they are doing in the classroom with graphic organizers and how they can use them more effectively.” (Mark Johnson, Principal 2008-04-17)

"With an emphasis on transforming information into knowledge, everyone who considers themselves a learner or a facilitator of someone else’s learning would benefit from the author’s message and ideas. I appreciate the voices of learners of all ages that the author sprinkles throughout the work! These bits bring the ideas to life." (Judith A. Rogers, Professional Learning Specialist 2008-04-17)

This book discusses the value visual mapping: brainstorming, graphic organizers, and concept mapping and offers suggestions for student use. More importantly, the book validates these visual maps with research, software references, and other authors and books. It's a great way to map student thinking and if done correctly, students can transfer the skills when needed. The author relies less on reproducible orangizers and more on student-centered products in conjunction with questions, collaborating and evaluating. A good resource for a team to tackle interdisciplinary units. Additionally, the author demonstrates visual mapping uses in the business world and on a district or school level. Great staff development idea.

I was completely new to idea mapping and this book came recommended to me by someone who had used it extensively. I found it very exciting and helpful personally -- the many examples provided made it easy to understand and these gave me ideas for customizing the process to my own discipline. After several months of experimentation, I can see that it has changed my teaching style considerably. I would recommend it to anyone who is either a teacher or a student.

If you're wondering which book to purchase, this book is based on previous books Visual Tools for Constructing Knowledge, and A Field Guide to Using Visual Tools. It also incorporates new research and applications for the visual language the author calls Thinking Maps.

Full review to follow, but so far so good.
