5.0 out of 5 stars a comprehensive program for teaching comprehension, January 30, 2000

Alison Bell (Paso Robles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Visualizing and Verbalizing for Language Comprehension and Thinking: For Language Comprehension and Thinking (Paperback)
This book is an easy to follow step by step guide to teaching language comprehension. At a time when the higher order thinking skills of most students in the U.S. are dropping, this is truly an essential teaching manual for every teacher and parent. You can learn how to "picture" or "image" the gestalt!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hallmark and a Keystone Guide to Reading Comprehension, November 28, 2008
This review is from: Visualizing and Verbalizing for Language Comprehension and Thinking: For Language Comprehension and Thinking (Paperback)
Nanci Bell is a pioneer in the field of reading comprehension and literacy interventions. This book is an excellent step-by-step guide to helping children learn to understand and communicate what they read. This work is also extremely helpful in working with children who have Autism. Children with Autism tend to struggle with visual imagery which impairs oral and written communication. This is an awesome and innovative approach to providing support for children with disabilities in developing visual imagery.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff!, January 29, 2009
This review is from: Visualizing and Verbalizing for Language Comprehension and Thinking: For Language Comprehension and Thinking (Paperback)
This book presents a clear, logical way of developing the ability to visualize as you read, a skill all struggling readers lack. I teach deaf/hh children and found this book very helpful in laying out steps to develop their visual thinking. A quick read and easy to use technique that is beneficial for any age or disability.

5.0 out of 5 stars GET NEW VERSION; 2007 PUB, March 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Visualizing and Verbalizing for Language Comprehension and Thinking: For Language Comprehension and Thinking (Paperback)
This book is great but I accidentally bought the 20 year old publication where a recent publication was available. Amazon should punch some icon or something saying new version available on anything like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Powerful Resource, December 30, 2011
By

This review is from: Visualizing and Verbalizing for Language Comprehension and Thinking: For Language Comprehension and Thinking (Paperback)
This is an extraordinarily powerful resource for teachers of students who struggle with comprehension. It has a nicely sequenced, user-friendly set of tasks that will produce rapid improvements in understanding as well as retention of written material. It also helps youngsters who are struggling with comprehension of what they hear. Finally, it helps students enjoy what they read and thus heightens interest.

I trained para-professionals in this method. We found it produced immediate improvements in our weakest readers. For example, a child who at first could remember only two or three details from a text could, after just two or three sessions, recall more than 15 details.

The Visualize and Verbalize method is easy to use, and children enjoy it. If you have students who need help with basic comprehension, try this book. I think you will be pleased by the results.

Keep in mind that you can apply this approach for whole-class instruction to increase all of your students' comprehension at any level. The ideas are applicable to any teacher, so long as some intelligence is brought to the task of figuring out which parts your students need and which parts can be left out. The book itself, then, is designed to help students who are really struggling, but it can also be used to increase the skills of students who are already performing adequately.
