I ordered my first set of patches and started using them at the end of September (about 6 weeks ago). I put a new patch on every three days. They work for me, and I'm so glad I tried them... because doctors were not being helpful, and the patches have made a huge difference in my life.
Background.
My battle with fatigue and a whole slew of other health-type problems is a long detailed story, but I will keep it short: For several months I have been tired, been depressed, had stomach problems, had dizzy spells, been cold most of the time, not slept very well, begun shedding my hair, suffered from "cloudy" thinking (like trying to think through cotton), and generally feeling like a lazy, no good, whiner who accomplishes nothing. I was tested for low thyroid (normal), pregnancy (not!), and UTI (apparently not, though my doctor did not share the results at all). My doctor, being a very "enlightened" man (who, by the way, is not my doctor any more) decided that I should probably take a low-dose anti-depressant to help me sleep and to help "even out my moods" (a.k.a. I'm obviously just imbalanced because I'm a woman). The anti-depressant helped me fall asleep, but not stay asleep, and it made me MORE sluggish.
Anemia Maybe?
Since the doctor seemed unwilling to help me in any meaningful way, I decided to take things into my own hands. In a *not-so-very* scientific approach (i.e., I google-searched "why am i so tired all the time?"), I began looking at several possible common causes of fatigue in women (3 of which had already been excluded by my doctor's tests). As a side note, I only put stock in reputable sources like the Mayo Clinic site, but I admit to using forums and non-scientific web sources to further investigate each of the areas. The one that seemed most likely, based on my symptoms, was anemia... something I hadn't even considered until that week.
Anemia Caused by Vitamin B12 Deficiency?
Ok, there are lots of kinds of anemia, some more severe than others, and I am not a doctor, so I decided that my first step would be trying to take B12 supplements to see if I had anemia caused by a B12 deficiency. I then researched types of B12 supplements and ended up ordering a B12 patch (rather than a pill, or sublingual lozenge) that contains methylcobalamin (instead of cyanocobalamin). Supposedly, it is much easier for the body to absorb the methyl version... and the cyano version contains trace amounts of cyanide.
Why I Chose the Patch.
Researching supplements is NOT easy because most scientific research seems inconclusive and the FDA does not regulate OTC vitamins much. It's even harder to try to determine if regular vitamins, sublingual (dissolving) tablets, or patches work better or worse. I ended up ordering patches largely because they had the absolute best user reviews of all the products I could find. Lots of positive comments from people who had been diagnosed with B12 deficiency, then switched from the shots to the patches because they were so much easier and less invasive. I am so glad they worked... because I *hate* *hate* *hate* needles and I'm just not sure what I would do if a once a week shot were the only way to be ok again...
Day 1 Results.
I know the patches do something because I put the patch on around 6:30 a.m., and around 10:30 a.m., I developed a tremor in my hands and I couldn't sit still. It was like I'd had several cups of coffee or a couple of red bulls, but without that icky sicky feeling I get when I OD on caffeine. That first day was the absolute best day I had had since March. I felt alert. I felt happy. I felt less stressed out.
6 Weeks Results.
Evidence is mounting to suggest that B12 really is the answer for me. Since the end of September, I have only felt the depressive slugglishness a couple of times. My stomach problems (which have been around for more than 10 years) are gone. I haven't been dizzy for at least 4 weeks. I have been sleeping much better, with fewer night sweats and less interruptions. I feel clear-headed and articulate... my memory has returned and I feel *smart* again. I have not felt overwhelmed by sadness, hopelessness, anxiety, or fatigue. In general, my outlook is brighter, I smile and laugh more, and I don't feel like I'm having to work so hard to be "my old self." In addition to all that... weight loss seems to have gotten a whole lot easier. I have lost 4 lbs in 10 days--that's unheard of considering that I've been following Weight Watchers for nearly a year and I'm so close to my goal weight. My weight loss should be slowing down, not speeding up!
UPDATE 02/06/12. In November, I decided to try to switch to sublingual lozenges (because they were cheaper). Within a week, all of my symptoms returned, despite taking twice the amount of B12 daily than I had been getting through the patch every three days. I hadn't ordered more patches when I switched, so I had to wait for them to ship to me, which dragged out the horrible fatigue and depression another two days. I was so relieved when the patches showed up and I transformed back into myself again! As for my 6-week results: my stomach problems are still better (though not completely solved), I'm still thinking clearly most of the time and I've had no problems with dizziness, and my weight did not continue to plummet but I still have enough energy to exercise and I'm getting VERY close to my goal weight. Mostly, I just feel happy and normal: no depression. I call this a win, and I recommend other people try it all the time... because it won't hurt you to just see if it helps!
Maybe low B-12 levels isn't your problem, but it won't hurt you to rule it out, and it could make all the difference. It did for me.
