3.0 out of 5 stars Careful - this book isn't as neutral as the author claims it to be
If you read this book you will be given lots of evidence and independent studies on the various benefits of vitamins and minerals. But while this book claims to be neutral and balanced on the good and bad of each vitamin, the author does leave out a variety of studies that have cast doubt on the benefits of "mega-doses" of various vitamins and minerals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Did you take your Multivitamin today?, September 23, 2002
With life moving at a record pace, you are doing well if you remember to drink your eight glasses of water a day. While water is undeniably essential to your well being, it is amazing how many of us forget to drink those extra glasses of water that could make all the difference. Remembering to take a multivitamin is another one of those daily things you almost have to write on your calendar to remember along with: "Exercise Today or Else!"

As I sit here chewing a Country Life Adult's Multivitamin, I wonder if I am getting all the essential Vitamins and Minerals in one supplement. Would it not be ideal if all you had to take each day was one chewable and delicious pill and that was it. Well, life is just not that simple, unfortunately. Each multivitamin is formulated differently and to find one that is Vegetarian and Hypoallergenic was a real plus.

Now, if you just picked up a bottle of multivitamins and you didn't know that taking over 8,000 I.U. of vitamin A per day was not advisable for pregnant women, you might want to read this book. If you are dealing with skin problems, you might want to take 10,000 IU and that would be fine. For Vitamin A to be toxic, you would have to take 100,000 IU daily for a period of months and you would not want to take such a high dose unless under a doctor's supervision.

There is a handy chart where you can Troubleshoot for Disorders. If you have Insomnia, you might want to consider Calcium and Melatonin (Read the book by Ray Sahelian first if you take prescription medications).

Most of us have taken Antibiotics. Did you know that this could cause a deficiency in B2, Biotin, Folic Acid, Niacin, C, D, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Potassium and Zinc?

What this book will do for you is give you the basic information you need to make informed decisions about your health. You will know which supplement to take and how much you should take. This book is written by a practicing certified nutrition specialist. Shari Lieberman is a CNS with a MA in Nutrition, Food Science and Dietetics.

The Contents Include:

The Case For Supplementation
The Vitamins: Vitamin A, D, E, K, B Complex, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pyridoxine, Cobalamin, Folic Acid, Pantothenic Acid, Biotin, Choline, Inositol, PABA, Vitamin C.
The Minerals: Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Zinc, Iron, Copper, Manganese, Chromium, Selenium, Iodine, Potassiuma dn Boron.
Beyond Vitamins and Minerals: Coenzyme Q10, Essential Fatty Acids., Flavonoids, Garlic, Glutathione and N-Acetylcysteine, L-Carnitine, Melatonin and DHEA.
Appendixes and Notes: Summary of Vitamins, Minerals and Other Nutrients, Drug-Induced Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies, Worksheet, Daily Supplement Schedule and Reference Abstracts for Vitamins, Minerals and Other Nutrients.

The first section explains why you need vitamin and mineral supplement to protect yourself against disease and to reach the highest levels of mental and physical well-being. It then explains how you can design your own personalized nutrient plan based on your specific health problems and nutritional needs.

Then, each of the following chapters discusses a particular vitamin, mineral or supplement. The authors provide a scientifically documented Optimum Daily Intake (ODI) to follow which is generally well above the government's Recommended Daily Intake (RDI).

There are sample worksheets and supplement checklists to help you in corporate healthful supplements into your busy lifestyle.

Nice Basic Book about Nutritional Supplements.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for Supplements!, February 6, 2000
By
Jon H. Kilgore (New, Braunfels, Texas) - See all my reviews
I have been looking for a reference to vitamins, minerals and other substances purported to be healthful for various reasons, THIS IS IT. Basically the approach is "prevention is worth a pound of cure". When things get serious, modern medicine is usually your best option, but along the way, maintain a health life style and give your body what it needs, not to excess. Studies are references with scientific background. I was concerned about taking too much of any one vitamin or mineral that was included in my multivitamin. With this book, I learned that with the IU content of most multivitamins on the market this is very unlikely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb. A must for anyone interested in supplements., February 14, 1999
This book provides a complete discussion of all the most important supplements, and does so in an easy-to-read style. It is also extremely well-documented, to prove that indeed supplements are necessary for optimal health. Excellent job, Shari and Nancy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference, may be a bench mark, December 30, 2004

This review is from: The Real Vitamin and Mineral Book (Avery Health Guides) (Paperback)
The book in itself is 5 stars. The reason I give it 4 stars is due to the fact that the author has done a great job collecting the info and putting it well, but not made the effort in describing in great detail how to design each individuals nutrient intake.

Good points:
1. The author is herself a nutritionist and she backs all her claims with scientific claims, and she is very honest at times when there is not enough research in the field.

2. Very good read and quite interesting flow of text.

3. Ample Information especially on each vitamins.

Bad Points:
1. Can get boring sometimes, I agree that mentioning about a certain doctor saying a certain thing makes the text in book more reliable, but too much bla-bla gets boring for people not from the medical background.

2. Design your own Optimum nutrient intake is the weakest chapter and that is the one which should have been strongest. This is what the book is all about, the information on all the vitamins is widely available and is the fact that we all need to increase the vitamin intake.

5.0 out of 5 stars I use it everyday!!, January 8, 1999
By A Customer
I manage a vitamin store and refer customers to the information in this book everyday! It is easy to use and is in simple language. I think it is power packed with information and would be a good book for either your first book or completing your library.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference for the layperson to professional, October 22, 1998
By A Customer
I reviewed many books before deciding on this purchase. Although I am a Registered Nurse, I discovered how much I did not know about vitamins and minerals for my own personal use. I find this book to be an excellent reference - my "bible" for dietary supplements. I recommend this to everyone. I find the information easy to read and it is direct and to the point. There is not a lot of unnecessary information built in. If you are looking for a particular vitamin or mineral, this book gives you information about dosages, specific health conditions, and also toxicities and maximum doses. I recommend it to anyone who wants to-the-point information that will help them decide on vitamin and mineral supplements. END

5.0 out of 5 stars Looking for a great book with gobs of information?, March 16, 2006
This review is from: The Real Vitamin and Mineral Book (Avery Health Guides) (Paperback)
Looking for a great book with gobs of information? Look no further! This book explains what each supplement is used for and the doses to take for specific diseases or just for optimal health. Perhaps the best thing about this book is that it lists information about adverse results if too much of a supplement is taken. I refer to this book time and time again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great information..., October 12, 2006
This review is from: The Real Vitamin and Mineral Book (Avery Health Guides) (Paperback)
This book has great information about all types of minerals and vitamins. I had a hard time putting the book down. I learned so much more about the minerals and vitamins and what doses you should be using. Now I know how much my body needs of certain vitamins.

3.0 out of 5 stars Careful - this book isn't as neutral as the author claims it to be, August 15, 2006

This review is from: The Real Vitamin and Mineral Book (Avery Health Guides) (Paperback)

For instance various recent studies on Vitamin E supplementation have shown no or negative correlation to heart disease. Several studies have even shown an increased mortality rate for people taking high doess of antioxidents (which are thought to do the opposite). A recent article in the Wall Street Journal highlighted some of these growing concerns (search on "the case against vitamins" for that article or "dangers of vitamins" for a variety of articles.)

I'm not an expert, in fact one of the reasons I bought this book was because I am confused on what to take and not to take and this seemed to be an impartial book. All I would suggest is that this book very much recommends taking vitamins at doses much higher than the recommended daily allowances (RDI), and before you take this book as the latest and best info and start a regiment of 15 pills a day, make sure you really do talk to your doctor or at least look at the contradictary studies now available online.

5.0 out of 5 stars Explains that you are not what you eat, but what you absorb., October 31, 1997
By A Customer
Explains why a good diet is not good enough. The authors explain how food lose their nutritional value as the food is stored or preserved. How some food's nutritional elements are in a form that the body cannot break down and absorb - Like corn is rich in nician but the nician is in a form that the body cannot digest. How the farm lands have lost some of their trace elements and are not being put back, meaning the food grown is not going to contain these trace elements. The authors explain the need for a good diet combined with a good suppliments make for a good health combination.
