I decided to go ahead and spring for a VitaMix, and I saw that this newer model was available. Yes, it's pricey, but you can apply for an Amazon Store Card, and on a purchase this expensive there is a six-month interest-free option, so that makes buying one manageable for lots of people, including me. That's exactly how I paid for it.
It's a very powerful machine, it has a new lid on the jar which is more snug fitting. Not as noisy as my last blender, which was a real banshee screamer. The only thing I might criticize is the recipe book that comes with the unit is focused on fruity, sweet drinks. Well, that's fine, we all love that stuff, but the machine can do much more than make frappucinos.Read more ›
The plastic container quickly changed from smooth and shiny to an ugly grey, scratched up interior. I have my Vitamix sitting on the bar right across my fridge for easy accessibility. Now I 'hide' the container beside the base, because it looks gross.
I remember seeing these Vitamixes in professional smoothie places and used to wonder 'don't they ever clean these containers?' now I know they did but there's nothing they can do about it - once that shiny newness is gone that's it. And did any of that rub off and go into my smoothies? I wonder..... Seems to me Vitamix could make a glass container and we wouldn't have that problem. But maybe there's a down side to glass I'm not aware of.
IMPORTANT UPDATE as of 8/27/2012
Thanks to all for your comments. I still use my Vitamix at least once a day and it is now time for me TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT as I have found THE perfect way to clean the container - not according to the Vitamix instructions which says to use 2 drops liquid dish detergent and warm water - but using the directions from this wonderful website which I found during a google search looking for a better way to clean the Vitamix - and folks it works....my container is now shiny and clean almost like it was brand new.
The secret ingredients are vinegar and baking soda mixed with warm/hot water. It's the fizzing action that does the trick!!!!
The simple directions are on the website. I only do mine about once a week and still get excellent results.
This TurboBlend only has high/low settings and the older style tall pitcher. It works well & is all you really *need*.
Costco has the 5200 with variable speed for only $375. Comes w/ cookbook & DVD. Variable speed is great for manipulating recipes like salsas and hummus where you need a bit more than low, but not full blast.
Vitamix' site offers certified reconditioned units, all have variable speed adjustment. Just click, 'Specials'. They only have a limited amount available every month or so. The Professional 500 unit also has presets for frozen deserts, smoothies & hot soups. The next generation Professional 300 (aka Professional 7500) has the shorter (but same size) pitcher that will fit under your cabinets, has a bigger blade & base which sucks down food more easily, it's easier to clean, has a better ventilated motor & runs more quietly. Neither is over $400.
Consider your options. They're all wonderful work horse machines, but peck around for the best deal/unit for you. You can get a lot more for your money at Costco or on Vitamix' site.

Pricey? Yes. It took me a long time to pull the trigger and buy a Vitamix, solely due to the cost. Now that I have one it is well worth the cost. Read morePublished 4 days ago by tacchad
My only real complaint is how loosely the container sits on top of the motor base. There is a lot of play and when you turn it on the container gets jerked to the side. Read morePublished 23 days ago by Aad
