I'm a huge Vitamix fan and have used one for many years. Mine didn't come with a dry blade container so I purchased one separately more recently. There's no question that it does a great job with coffee and whole grains, but the regular container works fine for some of those things, too. Recently I started grinding my own grains for bread on occasion. For example, I couldn't find sunflower seed flour so bought some kernels and made my own. I found the regular container made this flour meal just as well as this dry blade container did. Both were fast and effective. The regular container also made wheat flour, powdered sugar and other nut flours just fine. This container did a better job with coffee however.
Then, as long as I was experimenting, I decided to make my morning smoothie in this smaller container, and voila, it worked great, so I've been using this small one more for smaller quantities of things than because the blade is different. All in all, I'm healthier because of the Vitamix which has proven its worth many times over. I like having the second smaller container and use it regularly, but not necessarily for dry processing since both blade types seem to handle the majority of things. I haven't used the recipe book (which didn't come with my container when I bought it some time ago) so I can't speak to that, but I do believe the container itself is a nice addition to my Vitamix, though not a requirement. One last note: the regular tamper also works with this container because of the tamper's graduated size and this container's smaller plug size.

First, I absolutely love my Vitamix -- it's high quality, American made, and has a long warranty and commitment to customer satisfaction. In summary, just like American cars, the Vitamix embodies power.
The wet container does everything it promises, except I wouldn't try to boil soup in it. I got the dry container and have had a lot of fun grinding different grains and seeds. It's magic to watch everything get crushed into dust and it's satisfying to tell my guests that I made something from scratch -- not just a bag of flour but the actual grains or berries. Many of the ethnic dishes that required trips to specialty stores are now made possible by a visit to WholeFoods' bulk food section. The difference between the two containers is really in the way that food is spun away from the blades. I recommend the dry container for what it's meant to do. A word of advice on using yeast if you are into making breads: wait till the flour cools before you add the yeast. My first batches were cooked by the heat from the freshly-ground flour! I learned to wait for the flour to cool and was then successful.

It works and it does it's job well.
The only con I have about this grinder is that it overheats very fast so you have to take your time when grinding your seeds or herbs.

Wow. Wow! A product that actually does what it claims - unbelievable! This thing can grind 1.5 lbs of hard winter wheat berries into beautiful whole wheat flour in under a minute. No exaggeration. The ground product is warm, but I do not feel that it is in danger of losing nutrients (especially since, with this unit, you can dump it directly into the bowl and make bread immediately). A must-buy if you're into grinding your own whole grain flours.

Got this to make my own flour. I have a son with celiac's disease. It is cheaper to buy the gluten free grains in bulk and make my own flour. The dry blade container does a great job. No complaints.

I had to have the 3 HP Vita Mix Prep 3 after watching some videos. But I also wanted to be able to grind coffee beans. With free shipping, you usually can't beat Amazon. The trick I found to grinding coffee and whole grains, is to fill the container half full. Any less and it won't grind finely, any more and it will miss too. Then listen to the motor and you will notice when it's done.
If you have the Prep 3, you need to buy a complete container with the blade and lid. All containers will work with the Prep 3, but parts are not interchangeable.

I purchased this when I bought my Vitamix, and I love this dry container. I have used it to grind wheat, to crack wheat for soups, and to grind coffee. I wished I would have purchased my Vitamix before I purchased a several hundred dollar wheat grinder, I would have saved some money, actually a lot of money. This dry blade does exactly what it says it does. The ground wheat is very comparable to what my wheat grinder does, and it is a lot easier to use, and there is far less clean up with my Vitamix. If you are on the fence about this particular item just read the other reviews.

I bought this dry blade container after owning my Vitamix for several years. If you grind flaxseeds, nuts, coffee etc. and also want to make fresh flours this is your attachment. The Vitamix dry blade container can save room in your kitchen as this one attachement will replace several other appliances saving you space and money. I use mine mostly to make fresh flaxmeal and whole grain flours for which it works VERY well. The trick is using the right amount of seeds or grain so that the blade circulates it correctly and also purchasing the special spatulas that you can buy from Vitamix. This one american made attachement allowed me to avoid buying several appliances manufactured in China and Korea which also made me very happy. It's nice to know the workers who made my appliance are also paying into my social security system like myself. Thank you Vitamix for such great products!

It's okay but not perfect for wet ingredients.,
By D. Henderson (Baltimore, MD) - See all my reviews

I used the dry blade to process wet ingredients and the stuff is not as smooth as when I blend using the wet blade (a large piece of my peach still remained in the container even after a minute). So depending how important you need the consistency and appearance of your finished wet product (smoothie or soup), then use the wet blade for wet processing and the dry blade for dry processing.
Because dry ingredients places more stress on the VitaMix motor, the instructions recommend that you not run the motor for more than 2 minutes at a time. Yes, the VitaMix does has a thermal switch to protect the motor but then you really have to let the motor cool down before it will reset. If you have the stepped tamper it works with this 32oz container: no need to buy another tamper. I was looking for the VitaMix embossed label on the container: it is on the inside of the handle. To tell whether the blade is a wet or dry blade, the dry blade has a "D" stamped on it so. As I washed the container by using the same way to wash to 64oz container (add a few drops of dishwashing liquid, add water, and blend for a few minutes), the foam works its way up the sides of the lid. Only once did the foam ooze its way out the spout. Just keep your eyes on the container when washing it. From what I can tell, VitaMix uses this same 32oz container with its wet blade offering. I guess that the difference in lid design for the 64 Oz container is better at keeping liquids inside. PROS: Adds dry processing to your VitaMix. CONS: The lid is not as water tight as with the 64oz container. Cheap clear adhesive label to mark the container as a wet or dry container instead of embossing the container. There is still play between the container bottom and the motor base. So hold onto the container while the motor is on. The base and nut area is a very tight space so air drying after washing is needed. |
