Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Assisted reproduction programs offer hope to couples who have tried unsuccessfully to have a baby. Too often news stories and claims of high pregnancy rates at these clinics hide their low "take-home baby" rates. This resource helps couples make informed decisions about expensive and extensive procedures like in vitro fertilization (IVF), gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT), or zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT). The author, a magazine writer who has undergone IVF, surveyed 250 programs in the United States and Canada in 1991. Directory entries include each clinic's name, address, phone number, services, costs, pregnancy and birth rates, requirements or restrictions, and program staff. This book does have certain limitations. Staff members are not named, nor is there any indication of board certification, fellowship training, or academic affiliation. The information can quickly go out of date, and there is no indication that updates are planned. Still, this book will serve as a good starting point for many anxious couples. Recommended for consumer health collections and large public or medical libraries.
